Which book for a person brand-spanking-new to framing?

Someone from another board knows I'm a framer, and he has some general carpentry knowledge, but has never framed before, and he's interested in getting an idea on how to do everything from cut moulding / join frames / cut mats / cut glass / fit / etc. What book can I send him a link to buy to read up on professional framing, particularly for framing prints (as opposed to shadowboxes, paintings, etc).

Vivian Kistler's Volume 1 is really fundamental and pretty darn good. Omega has the rights to print and sell them though, so you would need to obtain a copy for him. Omega item B116

Thanks Johnny. Is this something he can log on and buy? If not, is there another book that he can buy, or another location he can buy this book?

He might want to go to one of the schools that give classes on framing. There are several around the country. I'm not sure where you are located, but you may find info right here on the G of a school in his area. It would be a lot more thurough and would take way less time than him trying to learn it all in bits and pieces. And there is nothing like hands on to learn framing.

Hi Chris,

Outside of having him work with you for a week or two, I would actually recommend three books for any framer to start with - new to the industry.

1- Vivian Kistlers Framing Volume I

2 - Chris Paschke's Mounting Book

3 - Paul Fredericks - Framer's Answer Book


Yes... there is lots of extra and not related information for this reader in all three, however these imho should be the starting three to any framer's library.
