The Shorpy site has already received a passing mention on The Grumble, but I just couldn't resist posting this picture.

There are hundreds of wonderful old shots on Shorpy, with enlarged versions big enough to print at high quality.

In the big versions of many of the city scapes you can pick out minute details of peoples expressions and clothes, and little stories within the scene. Really fascinating. You can get lost in those pictures when you're in the right mood.

For me the most striking thing about those shots is how surrealistic and alternate-time-line so many of them appear to modern eyes.

This is one of my favorites, check out the big version on the site. An ordinary event in those times, but oh-so-weird today.

Click Here to hop on the Way Back Machine to 1910 New Orleans. You may need to click on the picture once to get the full size zoom.

I love love love that site. Every time I go there I end up thumbing through pictures for hours. But your link says "page not found".

your link says "page not found".

Looks like they're blocking hot links. No surprise.

On the site search "Canal Street: 1910" for the New Orleans picture, be sure to view the Full Size version.

If you don't see a picture of a steam engine in my original post, search "Empire State Express" for shots of steam engines chugging down main street.
