I have a neon sign hanging in my window. I need to replace the transformer on it. The current one is rated 5.5kv, 30 mA.
I cannot find one with those exact specs. Would it be ok to use one rated 6.5kv 30mA?
Also, is it critical which output wire goes to which end of the tubing?
Thanks.

Darn we threw our long term "custom picture framing" one away just a couple weeks ago. I could have sent ya the transformer. It sounds like that would be fine, and the end shouldn't matter.

Thanks for the advice, Mike. This one has my shop name and an older logo that looks like the cross section of a moulding. I won it decades ago as the high bidder in a fundraising auction for our local public radio station. The making of a custom sign was donated as an auction item by a local neon company. Its original transformer was one of those big heavy ones. When that went out I replaced it with a newer compact one. It has lasted at least 15 years. Coincidentally, when I was looking up an exact replacement for this one online, it turned out that it was subject to a safety recall. There are a bunch of similar ones on Amazon, but most are 6.5kv.

Why did you throw yours away?

It was mounted on acrylic and the clips holding the neon were so rotted that they were falling apart. We used it from 2002-2019 or so, it was on 24/7 in our window. Andy didn't want neon at the new location, so it has been hanging in our basement at home since. We cleaned the basement :)
