Mat cutters: Alto's E-Z Mat vs. Logan Compact (301)

The Logan is easier to adjust as to mat width. I think the Alto is set in increments. But if you need to start with a inexpensive beginner mat cutter, at least go to the Logan (I think the number is) 750. On that 301, the cutter bar doesn't raise up, and it's a pain to try to slide the mat board under it, and it' so short. In no time you'll wish you had something bigger. (Unless of course you're an artist that only does small stuff for yourself.)
I once had a 301, for about 2 months. I had the 750sgm for about 5 years, and have had a 650 for about 6 years. Love it.

Bang for your buck the Alto is much better. We used one in our shop for over 15 years. Cut vgrooves and multi openings. No limitations so if you want to cut a 40x60 mat you can. I am not knocking Logan it is a well made product I have had a model I believe is the 650 for over 25 years. We bought from Art-O-Rama in 1976. But we always used the alto to cut the mats. We cut the blanks on the logan and the mats on the alto so much quicker and easier. I believe after talking to Greg at Alto's we may be the one of their oldest customers still in business

I bought an Alto in 1977 and used it exclusively for 6 or 8 months. Since then I've used a C&H, a Logan and a Fletcher. Most recently I bought a Mat Maestro. This last investment has made me nostalgic for the Alto. I recommend it (the Alto, not the Mat Maestro.) It can do a lot - just not too useful for sizing boards.

I have a Logan Concept One (not now in production)and was very happy with it until I got a CMC in the summer. One tip: Logan brand blades work the very best, but wipe them down with lighter fluid prior to inserting them in the cutter. They are covered with oil and will ruin your mats.
