Hello,

I need to mount a laminated map . size about 30 by 40 .
Can I drymount it ( I have flat drymounting press )? Or I should use an adhesive.?

Any experience with laminated art ?

Thank you

I would try to find out what the map laminators recommend. I believe that the plastic used is Mylar - very hard to get stuff stuck to.

I've done them with Canvas MountCor, and it worked great. It's a good idea to make sure the back is clean of any dirt or handprints (grease), and as Ylva said, sand it a bit.

This exact subject has come up on occasion.
Use the Search tool to find exciting discussions, such as this one:

I have also dry mounted a couple of laminated posters/maps on Mountcor.
I used low heat (about 130C +/- ?)and short dwell time.
I let it cool completely, evenly covered by weight over the entire area.
Then tested by trying to peel the lamination away from the mountboard.
If I could lift the poster too easily then I pressed it again for even longer, but very little increase in temperature.
When I was satisfied the adhesion was sufficient it seemed to hold quite strongly.

These were done at least 2 years or more ago.
I haven't had complaints of failure (yet).
One was put into a Clark metal frame with no glass, and no matting.
The other was unframed. I don't know what the client did to display that one.

Just remembered something else. We use a vacuum press, and usually take 2 minutes for Mount Cor, (also at 130). But for laminated, or large pieces, I do it for longer. For pieces under 36 x 48, I set it for 3 or 4 minutes and leave it. For big ones, I usually do it for a couple of minutes one way, then open the press and turn it, before finishing with 2 minutes the new way. I know presses are supposed to heat evenly, but turning it seems to help make sure all corners mount well. That said, if nobody else does this, please let us know. I'm always happy to learn better methods.
