I use brown kraft paper to back most pictures, and the last batch I got from whichever vendor was fine. I just put on the rolls I got from Decor a couple of months ago, and it's see thru! Like parchment paper. I can tell what color the frame is, and what color the backing foamboard is. I can see that I used vnails. Then I went to order a roll yesterday from Turner, but they're out... grr... so I'll be using this stuff.

...is there no standard for kraft paper?

Not really. I generally use black c r a p paper, but it is still c r a p paper.

LineCo seems to be somewhat consistent but it isn't c r a p paper.

:o

There must not be because everytime I order its different.I had some kinda like what your talking about but the next roll I received was much nicer.

They sell paper by "weight" 40 lb or 50 lb kraft paper is good. The thin stuff is probably a lighter weight paper. Ask when you order what the weight of the paper is (not the weight of the roll :) )

Also ask for "virgin" kraft over recycled kraft, there is a difference in thickness between 50lb virgin and 50lb recycled.

Southern Moulding sells a nice heavy kraft paper that has latex in it. It is very durable, and comes in black and dark green, on 36" rolls.

You had a low weight brown kraft paper. Get a higher weight.

I use brown kraft paper for wrapping work. The 30lb weight is too thin, it's like butcher paper. I also find the 50lb kraft paper too thick for wrapping up finished artwork; masking tape won't hardly hold the wrapped ends down, it's so stiff.

But the 40lb kraft paper is a nice weight. It's all I use for wrapping items.

I use black kraft paper on the backs of frames. I believe I also use 40lb weight paper on that, but would have to check. I know it's not more than 40lb, could be 30lb.

Also ask for "virgin" kraft over recycled kraft, there is a difference in thickness between 50lb virgin and 50lb recycled.

I'm mot trying to make any enemies, but I'd have to disagree. It seems like the recycled kraft paper has a little more give to it and is easier to work with. The virgin stuff that I have used seems stiffer and is more difficult to get a good looking dust cover out of it. On top of that, you're not killing so many trees. We generally use 40#, but 50# is fine too.
