Does anyone knows where could I find Gustav Klimt custom frames- Art Nouveau? Any ideas who would make these?

Hi, mb.

Do you mean the sort of frames that were originally put
around Klimt's artwork, or just Art Nouveau style frames
in general? Or something specific that I haven't heard of,
really having to do with Klimt's designs reproduced on frames?

Yes the frames that were around his artwork.

Any of the closed corner frames manufacturers can do them. Try Munn or Rhonda Feinman.

American Choice. Great frames, great designs. And as if that weren't enouigh, Cornel is a stand-up guy.

I think Klimt did design his frames; not sure of who executed them. Back in that golden age when the frame was an important and integral part of the final object, many artists were involved in the design of the frame.

I ditto Baer.

I think Klimt took alot of time and interest in designing his frames, often painting on them. I believe many of his frames were made by one of his brothers, who was a designer, goldsmith, metal sculptor, and similarly talented chap like his other brothers.

l earn something from you guys avery day. I have seen Klimt replica frames at the show in Boston. An art dealer from NY had them and did not want to disclose who made them, but told me it was someone in Baltimore.

Klimt believed in the philosophy that the frame told the story in a full measure.

Deeply influenced in his growing up with the artists and framers of the Pre-Rafelite movement and Beau Artes, he was ready for the growing young movement of the Art Nouveau. Each frame is specific to the art.

Good luck in your search mbboston. Unlike what some believe, not just anyone, no matter how talented, can make a great reproduction or an "in the style of"......

Ok my learned fellow framers … I have a friend.....with a poster of “The Kiss”..... who has 1500 corner samples and was prompted by this thread to seek out one of those lowly, mite corner frames that would fit the description of Art Nouveau. My friend has samples from LJ, TC and Superior.

I told him to do it right and spend $3000. but my friend (the cheap skate) wants to keep it under $500.

Any suggestions.

Doug

Well, Doug as I see it..... (IMHO) "It sucks to be your friend".

Five things going against them out of the blocks: (again IMHO)

  1. "The Kiss"
  2. LJ
  3. TC
  4. Superior
  5. Price
"The Kiss" is no small poster. . . so with that you are already at $225 with mat and museum glass.... better to go print transfer and framed to the image.

So now you have $400 to spend on the frame.... This leaves you with a limited assortment of TC or Superior.

Wants it to be Art Nouveau . . .

OK, moving on to their Georgia O'Keefe knock off of Keen during his Dali Blue period......

OK, a little more levity...

"The Kiss" is a romantic with Moorish over tones. The seemingly random pattern of geometric pave' sets the tone of pattern. (yes, the couple is incidental). The frame would have been a flat panel with subtle welting. Any incising would be very shallow and possibly a Moorish or Gothic cartouch treatment in the corners transitioning into the plain field between the welts.
If there is any other pattern or adornment, it would be very shadowy sgraffito or just line markings in the gesso that would ghost through the gold. The patterns would be burnished or not for a color-on-color look but an overall homogeneous gold panel about 3-4" wide.
Any toning should be with burnishing and abrading until the rouge starts to hint through the metal.
A tiny bit of gauche (deep verde and a touch of burnt umber in a very thinned out wash of shellac maybe. This will deepen the shadows, and temper the "spot-lightness" of the gold.

About $3,800 should cover it.

If all it is is a poster, make a nice wide flat raw frame, and hire an artist to "paint it" with a Klimt-like design. That might scootch you under the $500 mark.

Marty Horowitz at Goldleaf Framemaker of Santa Fe can make you a perfect Klimt frame reproduction. He just came out with a beautiful Mucha line of frames from the same period.

Oooohhh - I would love to see the Mucha frames - I have a lot of old Mucha prints from back when they were popular. Is there a website?
