Framing works on tracing paper

Yes, I use a very fine Japanese tissue, say 14 gsm, with starch paste for hinging. You can attach with just the feathered edges and remember to dry carefully. It is a bit easier to use T-hinges and cover the edges by a small amount.

thank you! Do you do a window mat after hinging?

Put it in to the search here - but here’s how it works anyway

If they're okay with seeing the hinges, you should consider a hedgehog mount (art floated on top of mat) and use spacers. Search for hedgehog mount, there are multiple threads and a good video for this method
However, the hinges will show.
It's one or the other. Hinges visible or window mat.

This is the first time I've ever seen the term Hedgehog Mount.
I usually call this a Float.

The client doesn't want a window mat, so I'm trying to visualize other methods of mounting
Well that limits things a bit.
Your options are generally to hinge or glue to what is below the art. There is also the static electricity method, DCO(direct contact overlay), and magnets.
Suspending the art on a raised platform is also a type of float mounting.

Why would tracing paper be any different from any other paper mounting method?

If it's pencil on tracing paper, it rubs off on everything. Tracing paper is very transparant, so it becomes more difficult to hide the hinges. I would not do a DCO mount on that at all. Magnets would be an option, if customer is okay with that.
