I also work at a middle school.
We just received a 4 x 6 photo that needs to be displayed. It is of our band and kinda formal.

We have a pro printing place in town that can do the dry mount on a mitey board which is guarenteed not to bow.

Glazing will be a problem. It will be mounted up above kids reach, but glass is still not resonable. I am afraid acrylic will bow.

We are trying to do this cheap of course, but keep it looking nice.

The printing place says they have a very nice laminate that is UV protecting. They say it will protect the picture and give it a glossy look.

My framing dist. will deliever the assembled frame. Going with a nice black wood frame. Weight wont be a problem wtih no glazing.

What do you all think???????
These laminates okay?? Thanks

Go with the laminate but not glossy - satin or matte laminate will look much better under school type lighting. We've done hundreds of these and some have been on display for 20 plus years and still look great. Make sure you get a digital file of the image for the school archives - this way the image can be replaced someday if needed.

I may have been sleeping under the wrong rock but I don't know what "mitey board" is!

Could you fill me in on that type of mounting board. Is it something like gator board or Sintra??

I agree with bandsaw with using the lamination. There should be little risk if the piece is hung above little prying hands and most quality lamination has a UV screener in it. Well, I am not sure about the roll lamination but I would guess most of them have it also.

Framerguy,
Mighty Board is like super dense foam core. It is like gator, but skinny. I think Bainbridge or Beinfeing make it. It is not for conservation framing.

I would agree with the less likely than regular foam board but it still warped on me.

Just like Gator Board it is a pricey product. If you are intending to laminate the photo, and conservation is out the window, I would mount it on MDF board from the home center near you. MDF has a rough side and a finished side. They sell for around 20 bucks a sheet. The Gator and Mighty are around 40 to 50 bucks for a 4' x 8' depending on who your supplier is.

I have been having good results using Fusion 4000 on MDF. This has become my default for Z-gelling and so far so good. (Knock on wood)

Dont see any way to conservation frame this monster...........at least on a smaller budget.

I just have to say, that as a former 'bando', three cheers for your school for even hanging a band photo that size in the school! Good for them!

I just wanted to say that, I have no advice... sorry.
