Hi there! I’m looking for a very specific tool that I cannot seem to find or figure out the name of. Has anyone seen of this specific tool and/or know its name? It’s just a metal measure stick with a miter on the end to (obviously) measure from the miter and I’m looking for a new one. Any guidance is appreciated! Thank you

That is a specialty frame moulding chop measuring stick. I have no idea if they are still being made.

Never seen anything like that before. How is it used?
Looks like it might be pretty easy to make one out of brass stock from a hardware store.

I had one of those in my former shop. It measures the inside length of a moulding cut to size to determine the "glass" size of a chop. It might have come from the former United catalogue. Possibly the owner of 888 Manufacturing can answer this question.

Using a standard tape measure will accomplish the same task.

Thank you! I will see what I can find out. I think it just has that sentimental value more likely since it’s been around since the shop opened in the 90s. Was trying to see if a replacement existed!

It’s just to measure the inside of the miter so the glass/picture/mat sits well in the frame. Something that a tape measure can be used for, but it’s been around the shop since the 90s and something happened to it so I was trying to find a new one for my boss since it’s a pretty nifty tool haha

Well, yes. The purpose of the angled end is to more-consistently get the "0" point of the scale placed precisely at the inside edge of the miter cut.

I have not seen a tool like this prefabricated, but years ago I made one out of 4 mm thick aluminum composite material (ACM) and a tape measure. I mitered a plank of the ACM an screwed it (with a 6 ft. tape measure) to the edge of a work table, being careful place the "0" point at the vertex of the angle cut. You could make this on a removable board backer, as well, and hang it on the wall when not in use.
