Hey All,

I have a client who would like to have a jersey framed. Derek Jeter wasn't thinking when he signed, and signed the front (where the yankees logo is), and his name and number are on the back. I suggested a double sided frame, or an acrylic. But I got to pondering, how would one hang this double sided frame. I have done double sided frames, and built a base, so they could be displayed on a table, but nothing to support a huge frame. This is going to be oversized, due to the fact that the jersey is 31X38. HUGE!!! I'd really like to do a frame, rather than acrylic to show off my skills, I have some excellent ideas for it, but hanging will be a problem. The client wants to be able to switch it back and forth when he feels like it, (from front to back of jersey).

Also, does Gemini or Acrylic Queen make boxes that have UV protection? I never frame a jersey without it wearing protection. :D

Suggestions please....

The interesting part of the jersey is where Jeter signed, even if he is a Yankee. What would your customer think about showing just the front of the jersey, with signature, and including a Jeter baseball card to show who it is? I did a couple of jerseys that way over Christmas -- Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. I used leftover fillet, cut the fillet backwards, and made mini-frames for the baseball cards out of the fillet. Also, if you do it this way, you can fold the jersey to reduce the overall size of the frame.

I think if you try to do the display as doublesided, you're going to have to attach the jersey to the inside of the frame itself, to keep it in place. That's just going to look bizarre, and like you said, it will be huge. [Be glad it's Jeter and not Yao Ming or Warren Sapp]

Oh, and Gemini does give you the option of UV protection.

I did a jersey last year: 2 sided glass AND the customer wanted the option to open it and wear it.
It would be hung in a car dealership showroom from the ceiling (fair length of chain) and seen from both sides.

Solution: built a 2 1/2" wood spacers (to hold the glass panels), end cap screws and a boat cleat. Drilled holes through both frames near the miter and used the caps to hold together. The cleat had 4 screw holes that would strenthen the hold on the two back-to-back frames at the top.

Customer just needs a flat head and phillips screwdriver, slip the jersey off the dowel and wear!

Here are pics.

If the customer wants to hang it for viewing from both sides by walking around it, then you probably should use two frames back-to-back, with decorative chain or fine stainless steel wire for suspending it from the ceiling.

If the customer wants to hang it on a wall normally, but have access to it, then I suggest using a 32x40 Nielsen Memory Box. This is a recently-introduced family of shadowboxes made to open/reclose, using their 100-series mouldings. One long rail is split lengthwise, allowing the UV-filtering acrylic to be pulled out of the frame. A black background mat and WallBuddies are provided. This is a very neat and practical design, and not very expensive.

You could hang the jersey in there by a hanger, 3M Dual-Lock, or Velcro, and the customer could take it out, wear it, or turn it around at will. It would have to be taken off the wall, but no tools are required to open/reclose.

Thanks Jim for the input. Is 32X40 the largest those memory boxes go? The Jersey is huge....I didn't realize Derek Jeter is such a big guy, but this thing is 31X38 tall. I would really like to go all out with the double sided frame idea.

If I do, go that route, does anyone have any good ideas as to how to suspend the jersey? Obviously, it wont be sewn down to anything. I'm thinking an acrylic hanger. Do they make them to "fill out" the jersey so that it does wrinkle and bunch up. What I mean is giving it some structure instead of just a normal hanger?

The client is looking to hang it on the wall, so I would probably have to use a decorative hanger near the top, either chain, or a boat something-or-other someone showed up above.

Gemini/Showcase will make an acrylic hanger to fit your jersey. Send them a template for the shape.

Come to think of it, Showcase could build the whole thing out of clear acrylic. The bottom could be open if you hang it from the ceiling, or you could stand it in a frame base.

Out of a sense of wanting to support a fellow grumbler, AcrylicQueen, can you build that type of setup for me? Also, I can't remember, is Gemini a sponsor of the G? I would like to support those who support us.

I think I am going to go with the double sided frame, considering the customer wants to hang it on the wall. I liked the boat clear idea, so that is a likely choice for hanging hardware. What do you use for an anchor in the wall?

I have some really cool ideas for this. I have some hockey jerseys coming I. Later that I can try other methods with.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Dave.

The example I posted using a boat cleat was to hang from a bracket arm (think of an outdoor plant hanger arm); I'm not sure if it would work in your case, i.e. mounted to the wall.

Since your piece will mostly be on the wall, instead of a boat cleat, I would install d-rings in an upright orientation and hang on a bolt in the wall with a head large enough to hold the d-ring without slipping off.

Julie, I actually like that boat cleat idea, and I'm thinking if a heavy duty hook of some sort, anchored to a stud, would actually look good. I know the tendency is to hang the art form the ceiling but the client wants it hung on the wall. Maybe I can convince them to hang it from the ceiling, just close to the wall.

BTW....Kansas Jayhawks RULE!!!!!

Lois at Superior certainly could build the whole thing for you, or just the hanger, or any other acrylic parts.

I mentioned Gemini/Showcase only because Chicago is much closer to you than Los Angeles, and shipping acrylic boxes is often costly. But if you have a preference for Superior, then the nominal difference in shipping cost may not be an issue for you.

You can also hang it using a double swing door hinge (like a saloon door) - that way you can flip it around & view both sides while it is still hanging on the wall. Easy to mount to frames, but harder to mount to the wall - I'd mount it to a board that gets mounted to the wall.

Do you like the idea of a hanging jersey? I don't - looks better when stretched but for a dbl side you can still use a acid free (Artcare) foamcore form with a frame back to back -its a little tricky to have it done nice - but I've done them that way before.

For the yankees - you can use a Roma red on one side & the Blue for the other - looks great - I think its 10961076 10961076

If you are interested - give me your email address & I'll send you a bunch of picks on how I've done it

Hey Dave
My name is Todd I have been encasing double sided jerseys for 25 years the same way. Call me for a quotation. I have a small plastic shop in slc Utah that I work from doing sports memorabilia ect… I know I have the solution to the Jeeter problem you’ve been faced with. I have probably done close to 300 jerseys over the years along with thousands of items encased in acrylic sealed air tite and wall mountable. My jersey setup requires hanging from ceiling utilizing cables available at home center stores worldwide.

While this is an old thread, the topic of double sided framing/display does come up somewhat frequently.
You might consider starting a new threadin this section: https://www.thegrumble.com/forums/framing-vendors-business-discussion.12/ Framing Vendors & Business Discussion showing some examples of your products.
That way, in the future, when someone else does a search for the subject they will find you.
Just a suggestion.
