Hi!

We are just considering our mounts for our framed original comics - would really appreciate your thoughts/preference for the white or black mount below?

Many thanks,

Richard

Are you using standard sized mount/mat?
The uneven border is a bit discordant.
The comic has more background on the sides than the top and bottom, but the mount/mat is larger on the top and bottom than the sides.

So far I am in favor of the black overall design.

Thanks for the feedback - the mount size was a compromise to be compatible with the various different comic sizes which do vary by era, country (UK/US), type etc. We set the size for our main seller (Star Wars) which is also one of the biggest - this does have even spacing :-)

We order our frames and mounts wholesale as a single unit - we have thought about stocking different mounts but since we use original comics our stock mix does vary.

I do agree the discordant spacing does rankle me! However there is an argument around the way we display them - see below. The middle bottom one is from an old frame/mount we used - is has even spacing but perhaps looks out of place when compared to the other five?

why not lose that?
We did try it without a mat (I'm learning the US phrase!) - it looked a bit "cheap" but the main problem was we are using a double rebate box frame so the tabs that hold the glass were visible i.e. the mat hides these in normal use. Shame since that would have knocked a few cents off the cost!

If you must use a window mat, I would favor black with a black background. How are you attaching the book to the background?

I agree with John - Why not omit the window mat altogether? You could use a clear film Book Mount with a glass spacer for reversible, non-invasive attachment. Or, if you're using acrylic glazing, you could use a DCO attachment, equally non-invasive and reversible.

If you could make it even around, like that bottom center one, then white it nice for drawing the eye to the comic. It DOES stand out, because it looks better than the others, lol. Otherwise go with black because it minimizes how out of whack the mat is to accommodate a standard size frame for different sized comics.

I thought it may be to conceal something.

You have had to mix function with design, a compromise which makes for distraction in this case (and in most cases with three-dimensional things).
You don’t need a double rebate moulding. You can use rebate spacers in a normal moulding and it won’t need very much depth for a comic. These spacers can be wooden, plastic, foam board or foam board with mat board bonded to it if you want something other than black or white.

This won’t take any longer or cost any more than your points and the mat to conceal them. There will be more choice of mouldings and probably cheaper too.

As GreyDrakkon, I like the white better if the mat is even, while I prefer the black to lessen the distraction of the uneven border.
I definitely understand the idea of standardizing to your best seller.

Really appreciate this and definitely something I'm going to think about. In your Harpers Bazaar picture how did you "contain" the magazine to stop it flapping open - is it in a sleeve of some sort?

It's a clear film mount - you can buy clear archival polyester in UK from Preservation Equipment Ltd (PEL), I think Lion also do it but only in one option of weight and roll size. If you put "Magazine" in to the search here, especially by member "Jim Miller", you'll get loads, maybe with diagrams.

Basically two sheets of film, one the width of the closed thing wrapped around everything bar the front cover and fixed with DS tape on to a piece of mat board the same size as the magazine behind it. Then another sheet wrapped around the whole thing in the other direction and fixed on to the same board. Fix all that how you like to your mounting board, no adhesive in contact with magazine at all. There are variations but that's the basics.
