where can i get software to put on my website so my customers can download their pictures and click on one of my frames and see how their picture will look in the frame? I know several picture framing websites that have this.

And all were developed at great expense by their developers. I played around with writing one about 10 years ago (I'm a retired programmer) and it worked pretty well but the investment in time each time a frame was added put me off. Maybe someone has an off-the-shelf one available but if they do it will be expensive. Plus you will have to create all the images. Lots and lots of images. In my imagining of it, each frame required 16 images which were stitched together dynamically on demand and sized to the art.

Far better in my opinion to have a selection of images on your site showing what can be done to display different types of artwork so that the customer feels confident to come in and let you work your design magic on his pictures.

Letting the customer thrash around cluelessly trying to design something online is more likely to end in frustration for him and sidelines you and your skills. Otherwise he/she mayjust want to get a price to compare with other businesses in an online auction.

The aim of an online presence should be to get feet onto your carpet.

Thanks guys. good points. I once had a brick and mortar and now only online. I agree about potential customer frustration. However, there are many online sites that now have it. I think it might reach a point where people start expecting it but maybe i am wrong. If this turns out to be too difficult i may just drop it. I appreciate the input from both of you.

Larson Juhl has a section of their website that you might want to check out.
I believe you can set up a link on your website that will send your customer to the Larson Juhl Design Studio.
I do not think you can embed it directly into your website.

The LJ Design Studio is the end customer interface, they do not see pricing information, nor even need to set up an account.
They can make the designs they like and then save or email their design directly to their framer of choice.
I have used this only for a couple of customers who could not come into my shop for whatever reason.

It might not be exactly what you are after, but might give you some ideas to work with?

I have a developed a simplified version where people can upload pictures, pick frames and mats and pay for them to be printed and framed. They then can pick up at your shop or you can ship it to them.
See this video:

I have new features coming soon. One being released in about 5 weeks, let’s your customers pick any photographs from Adobe’s Stock website and have it framed at your shop.

There are also some solutions from Lifesaver Software (one of our sponsors), Jonathan Lassen, Framing Engine, Mo Elyas, and others. They all produce a similar result, but with various licensing models. (up front, monthly fees, with or without hosting, commission based from sales, etc)
