Hello,

I have a Grok drawing to frame to conservation standards. It is two sided and my customer would like it framed to swivel on a base, so that both sides could be viewed. I know that framers have done this project before. Any advice on how to go about this? Does anyone have photos of previous projects? We have used stained glass moulding from Picture Woods and have done double glass and finishing the back with quarter round. To me the stained glass moulding would not be easily removable, right? Off the top of my head, the project might be about 18" after matting.

Thanks for your help!
Susan

Susan, I did a bunch of 11x14ish double sided frames with stained glass moulding and to make the art accessable (if ever the need arose) I joined three sides of the frames and drilled holes with countersinks in them at the edge of the top rails - it was a PITA until I really figured out how to do it properly - used nice brass screws - worked really well. Customer happy.

I can't recall how they were to be displayed (hanging or standing) - it was a long time ago and no pictures back then either! Sorry.

double double

I don't know if this will help, but I just made a rather nice double-sided double frame, that is: two double-sided frames hinged together. This was for two old parchment manuscript pages to be seen from both sides, like a book. I used double Larson-Juhl Senellier gold-leaf mouldings, with flat red liner from Raphael's. The liners took up most of the space between the two frames, leaving just enough room for some two-ply rag around the art and two pieces of museum glass in each frame. I just glued the two frames together, though I had considered using magnets. I puttied the crack where the two frames joined so it looked pretty good. I wouldn't want to take it apart again, but aside from being overly permanent it seemed a good solution for double sided glass and my customer was very happy to pay $650 for the 5X7" framed double double. The attached photo shows the frame with its reflection in a mirror so you can see the back.

Is it archival framing if you have to enclose all four sides as in a stained glass moulding? I can only imagine applying the blue Lineco tape to the little groove in the moulding....Or is it archival framing if two mouldings are glued together as in Jeffrey's very lovely manuscript example?

I suppose if the edges of the glass sandwich were to be taped with that copper-colored tape it would make it archival, providing the innards of the package were all zeolites and raggy.

However, if the glass ever breaks in the glued together frames - then you are up the proverbial watercourse without the traditional method of propulsion.

That's very nice looking, Jeffrey. Personally, I would have skipped the putty, though. If you're talking about the nailhole stuff, it never dries and would always present a risk for getting on unintended surfaces. A better solution might be to apply thick acrylic paint into the groove and wipe off the excess. Once it dries it would be safe and stable.

I think this is a very affordable price and a great deal..
