i'm looking for a company that carries a tape measure with a lead on it.. so the 'zero' is about half an inch from the end of the tape. my coworker has one from framer's inventory, but evidently they no longer carry them? any ideas?

Try Home Depot, or a local hardware store? I've got to get out and find myself a new tape measure. I used to have one that had the 1/8, 3/8, etc. marked on it. I know how to read a ruler, but lately I find myself messing that part up. I'll measure something at 5/8, but it's actually 3/8.

Are you referring to the little green tape measures? If so I'm looking for them as well. I've been guarding my last one for over 2 years now.....

Since K&E and Lufkin quit making such tapes, they
have been very hard to find. There are sewing tapes that come in plastic cases, that can be used, but they are made of plastic impregnated
cloth and can stretch. On the web there are
inexpensive tapes from China, but they must be
bought in bulk and they begin with a hook. Flattening the hook and extending the tape is
challenging but the addition of a segemnt of
strong pressure-sensitive tape, doubled on itself
can do.

Sharon,

Lowes has a Lufkin tape measure with the fractions (in 1/8 increments) that also has a lifetime warranty. If it breaks return it and they will replace.

Thanks, Tim, for the info. Haven't started my search yet, but I'm going to check the Lowes website for locations near me!

There are a couple of types of tapes that have a dead space before the zero point starts. Lufkin makes two tapes I know of. One is the model W606P Executuve Diameter Tape ¼” x 6 ft. The other is the W393 Architect’s Pocket Scale ¼” x 5ft. Both are recoil style. They are hard to find and the price from a source like Grainger’s would be about $20 US$. Grainger lists them both in their catalogue but they may be special order. They both appear to be currently made by Lufkin. The architects tape was available at my local Grainger and if I wanted the W606P, I had to order 24 and wait about a month for them to arrive.

The tape you want is the lufkin W606P.
There is about 3 inches of tape between the end and the zero. The first 12 inches are in 32nds and the rest is in 16ths. 1/4" wide by 6 feet. Nice metal case that fits in pocket. The backside has a scale for measuring diameters - ignore this.

Lufkin tapes are under "Cooper Tool"

We've used these for years in our shop - saves many errors and pay for themselves quickly.

"NORTH WOODS FRAMES is 680 Main St, Box 46 Baldwin, WI 54002, 1 800 435 5882. They are $6.95 each or $5.95 for 6 or more. "

This is the source for the bright green tapes that start at zero.
I purchased several of these a few years ago when it was posted on the forum.
When I ordered mine they had a sudden increase in orders...wonder why?

I just ordered 4.

1 for the saw/sanding area
1 for the assembly area
1 for the design desk

...and one to replace the above when someone walks off with one...yuck

Thanks

I just ordered 3. No one walks off w/mine except for me. I find them in the bathroom, in my pocketbook, and in my car. Wish I did have someone else I could blame!

How come you're not here defending Stanley?

Oh, gosh, sorry! I wasn't paying attention.

I do, in fact, have a Stanley MaxSteel 12' Fractional Read tape measure that's marked in 1/8-inches. I think I got it at Target or some other exotic specialty dealer.

It's not the talking Stanley, though. Despite the name, this one is mostly plastic and doesn't seem interested in receiving alien broadcasts.

The one that does is locked up for my own good. It was either him or me.

After reading this thread on Tuesday, I ordered a Lufkin W606P through www.mscdirect.com .... got it the next day ... seems they have several distribution sites ... one happens to be about 10 miles from me. Anyway, it's teeny (and pricey), but it is as described .... and VERY spiffey (cats in pajamas come to mind).... how did I live without it?
