I was wondering what kind of tape you use to make a book-like hinge used to attach the window mats to the back board.

Originally I was taught to atg the window mats to the mat that the artwork is attached to. I see that fellow framers do not appreciate opening a package like that and I can appreciate why. So I try to do the book hinge, but the left side of the window always seems to pick up (just the slightest bit - maybe I am the only one that notices). It makes perfect sense to me that it would, unless I used a very thin tape - like maybe japanese hinging paper. But I am sure that would not be sturdy enough. I know some grumblers use linen tape, and that is what I have been using. It's United's part number 5352; gummed linen tape (water activated).

Got any suggestions?

Gummed linen tape is recommended. Apply it full-length on a long edge; the top edge for landscape orientation; or left side for portrait orientation.

I agree with Jim-

The problem is too many framers do not adequately wet the adhesive, then dry the mat under weight. If you try to flex the mat before the book hinge is perfectly dry, it will pull up and make a sloppy hinge that moves. If you use a good quality linen tape (not shade cloth or holland tape) wet it adequately and allow the adhesive wo swell and activate, then press the mat and let it dry under weight, it will work well.

Jim said it as clearly as possible. If the dextrin on the tape is activated with warm water, a good, tight bond can be had.
