Has anyone figured out a way to deal with shinny spots on satin black mouldings?

I have had to deal with these from every manufacture that I have ever purchased black mouldings from. Cost doesn't mean anything when it comes to these rubbed areas.

I have used a light rub of 0000 steel wool but it leaves very fine scratches in the finish. I have also tried denatured alcohol with mixed result ranging from satisfactory to having to refinish the frame.

I am just about to my wits ends dealing with this.

Edie recommended the Mr Clean Magic Eraser. I bought a couple but haven't needed to try them yet. Better run down to Kroger and give it a try.

Works like a charm

I find it in the local grocery, but it may be in discount drug stores. If you can't find one, pm me your address and I will send some your way. They retail for $1.00 for a package of two. It works on all kinds of marks and spots. On the box it says "Compare to Mr. Clean Magic Eraser."

An art installer told me about it- he uses it to removes the scuffs on walls caused by frames sliding, bumping while he is installing.

I have used Novus Plastic Cleaner #1 and/or Novus Scratch Remover #2 on both satin and glossy/lacquer black mouldings. They work well on both satin and glossy.

Try on a small spot. You results may vary. :icon21:

Larry, I have used the Novus products but they leave the frame very shinny, but at least it is even. I will try the magic eraser.

I have used it far more on glossy black that scratches easily and only a few times on satin, but it does leave a nice glossy finish on the glossy.

If anyone is receiving satin black moulding from us with shiny spots out of the box, please let me know as I will have to reassess our packaging strategy.

Thanks for the tip on the Magic Erasers. It did the job in just a few swipes.

BTW, I have never purchased black mouldings from Vermont Hardwoods so I also have never had an issue with shinny spots on his mouldings. :)

I haven't tried magic eraser...but if the corners need a little filler, you can't rub hard...that's for sure.

I usually just get through it using a light touch.

But if it comes shiny? I have no idea.

And I've heard that you should never handle magic eraser with your bare hands.

What hands???

Dang, Janet, I wish you had said something about that sooner!!!

Don't handle the magic eraser with your hands!

(it's a joke, don't get crazy) :icon9:

Touching the Magic Eraser with your hands does nothing to your hands, .......... but don't rub your eyes later or your eyelids will disappear .................... Magically!!

I thought it was your HAIR you had to worry about...

:p

We use white race clean artist's erasers to remove spots from the inexpensive black, white, and other colored plasticized finish frames.

Amazing what the eraser will take off without marring the finish. (Disclaimer: But you should try it on a scrap before using it on a good frame. Had an instance where framer was a bit too anal about erasing the imperfection and built up some friction heat. :) And, everyone's level of erasing could vary.
