really pretty, I always love hinged shadow boxes. I wish more people would want them that way. It's not fun to have to open them back up later when they find their class ring or another medal.
Thank you all for the kind words!! Whew, my psyche is still intact, unfortunately, my ego is HUGE! The design I choose was from all the suggestions I got on my earlier post, it's a compilation of as many of those ideas I could combine, so it's really just built by me, and designed by the Grumble! Thank you all again!! Randy J.
That's a nice design, Randy. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I like the way you let the fabric be billow-y. It adds softness and catches the light in a lovely way.
I couldn't see if you had a closing latch or support for the
side of the front that's not hinged. If you didn't, there's a
way that works really well. Jim Miller shows it in his 'shadowbox and collectibles book'. It involves sinking a screw into one side and gluing an inset magnet into the other. They'll hold together when it's closed, and it helps to prevent the box from coming open or the lid from sagging.
Now that I've written this, I'm wondering if maybe you did do that, and then just painted them black to match? I'm also smiling at how happy your customer must be with the results.
Again, thank you for all the compliments. Now I have a question. (imagine that) I built this for a friend, and of course there wasn't any charge, but, if it were done for a regular customer, what kind of price would it carry? I tried to price it on Lifesaver, but I'm not smart enough to do it correctly. I'm just curious what you would sell if for. Randy J.
In order to determine that, it would help to know your glass size, type of glass used, moulding width and preferably which moulding you used. I'll guess that the glass is about 16 x 25, but that could be way off.
LOL! Yeah, I guess that would make a difference! What a dummy I are. Maybe knowing what glass, and what cloth, and what mouldings, and what anything. Wow! I would have thought I was just a tad smarter than that!!!! But I guess NOT!!! Just like "Emily Litella" (SNL, Gilda Radner) "Never Mind." Randy J.
Wow. Very ambitious for a first shadow box! Nice design and execution. As to pricing, as you do more shadow boxes, keep a notebook of the techniques you use and how long they take. You will build up a database of information help you price these jobs. Remember to earn a profit on your labor / shop time as well as on the materials. I know this one was a (very thoughtful and generous) gift, but in general don't give away your special talents. Keep up the good work, and show us more. Rick
