I have a poster to dry mount for a customer that has a small area with what looks like masking tape adhesive residue. It's an older poster and the tape probably fell off long ago but there is a small brownish area where it was that feels slightly gritty.

I'm worried that this slight bumpiness is going to show through when I mount it. Any suggestions on ways to get rid of it? I did get some off by scraping with a razor blade but I don't want to scrape too hard for fear of damaging the piece.

Thanks.

There's a little gizmo that I use often. I call it a bristle stick. It's like a pen with fibreglass bristles that you wind out to the right length. I think the intended use is for cleaning electrical contacts in cameras and other such things. I think I got the last on from a camera store. It's great for removing marks on matboard as it doesn't dig into the paper.

Anne, you said you were worried that it would show through.

Don't worry, it will :) And so will the little bits that you scraped off, where ever they ended up on the back....

Glad to be of assistance :)

I like to use a mat cutter blade as I feel the stiffness gives better control than a razor blade. Then a good horse hair brush to try to get rid of the little bits of flum and adhesive crumble..

Same procedure I would use too :)

Actually I would go rub, pick, scrape, tape to tape then unseal. But most tapes aren't tacky enough to lift adhesive...

Well Unseal did nothing but get it wet. Luckily, it didn't leave a water mark when I tested it on the corner first but this paper isn't coated and it's thin, so it did go through. Dried and no mark but the residue is still there.

So I took a deep breath (away from the Unseal fumes), cut the archival tissue, tacked it to the 8 ply, and popped it in the press. It looks like it has come out ok.

I'll worry about cutting the mats and glass and putting them together next week. I just wanted to get them mounted before I left for the weekend.

Thanks for the help.

Next time, try using a little heat (tacking iron) before you try to rub the glue off. Your iron will get gunked up so use a scrap of release paper. Then while still warm, rub with your fingers.

Or try using a piece of masking tape on top of the leftover glue. Rub the tape down slightly the peel back.

Or when using unseal, attack the spot with a rag damped with the unseal. Move the rag in a circular motion to "melt " the adhesive. Use another part of the rag (a clean part) and repeat the circular motion. Repeat these steps until all adhesive is removed. paper will look wet but will dry quickly without stains.

When I was a kid I collected baseball cards. Sometimes they would get a gumstain on them. If you take a ladies' nylon and rub gently in a circular motion the gum stain would come right off without any scuffs or scrathes on the card. It worked great.

Does the lady have to be in it? :p

Sorry. It had to be said. :icon11:
