Today I have removed five canvases from their cheap nasty strainers in preparation for reframing ... all the strainers were very hard, and the staples had been driven in deep ... removing the staples was both difficult and tedious!

So here's my question ... has anyone found an easy way of removing staples? Anyone got a super-duper gizmo to make it an easy process?

Seriously, though, I have an old screwdriver that I sharpened to a useful shape on a bench grinder. Used carefully, it gets under the staples and provides enough leverage to get them started. Then I go back with pliers and remove them.

P.S. Aren't you supposed to be relaxing today?

Jane's away on an Alaskan cruise ... it's a mother-daughter shared experience thing ... so it's easier than usual for me to get some 'catch up' time in the workshop ... and Lord only knows I need some!

I use a screw driver to get the staple loose then pull it out with a needle nose. I doubt thats any easier than what you did, but thats the best I have come up with so far.

Talk to a local upholsterer about where they get their tools from. Bostitch makes a really nice staple remover we used for upholstery and now use for canvas. Or try General Upholstery Supply in Toronto.

Basically the same as Rick, but having part time help do it would make it go by better for me ;)

Go to this link and take a look at this tool:

I have one like this and I can get one of the points under the staple to start it and then both points go under and out it comes. At the least, it gets the staple up so you can grab it with regular pliers and pull it out.

Have had it for years.
