hello
I have not posted much on here, but am hoping for some help from all you knowledgeable people..

I have a customer who wants to 'float' a nylon flag that is 36 x 60, and use a metal frame (with acrylic glazing and spacers).
my plan was to use gator board as a backing to give some strength to the package, and then mount the flag on a piece of foam board (or another gator board) for the float. The question is how to mount the flag. It is absolutely not valuable (the customer mentioned it will eventually get tossed...), so really don't need to (or want to) go through the time-consuming process of sewing it down (and I don't have an EZtach). I was thinking fabric tape might do the job, but wasn't sure ... would appreciate any thoughts. They like the float idea, with about 2" around the flag, so pressing it right up against the acrylic isn't really an option.

would appreciate any help or suggestions!

Pressure-sensitive adhesives usually fail over time, especially under stress...such as gravitational stress on a big fabric. I suggest sewing it or buying the nylon tagging tool.

well, it looks like we actually DO have the AttachEZ. My wife had been doing most of the framing and it has slowly morphed to me doing it. and she purchased one at the LV show several years ago, and I wasn't even aware of it. I just did a little test run with it attaching the flag to foam core and it actually worked very well! so thank you for the input - it got us realizing we had the darn thing.

One question about it - I have the 2 page written instructions (all in a little kit), but no mention of what the appropriate size tags to use are. Is the idea to use a tag the same (or slightly less) size as the foam board to get a tight fit?

You want to use the shortest ones that will go through all your layers without snapping. Excessively long ones won't hold the item as tight to the board.
You will know you've gone too short if they won't cleanly fire without breaking. Another tip I would advise is to use a thin, sharp awl to pre-punch through where you will install the tag (not too big a hole, but enough to let the tool's needle go through easily. This will make your work a lot easier, and avoid breaking your tool's needle.

I use those thumb tacks with the "top hat" style thingy. it allows me to poke a tiny hole thru mat boards and/or FC so I can sew stuff.

I think it might make a smaller hole than an awl.

Possibly, depending on the awl. I find the pushpins a little harder to control than something with a bigger handle. I have several homemade "pokers" that are strong but thin. Here's a current Grumble thread about making your own.

...That's awl I'm sayin'.
