Whistler's Mother, that is, as part of a very special exhibition of masterpieces from the Musee D'Orsay that will be visiting San Francisco this summer, while the D'Orsay is being renovated. We're actually getting two shows from the D'Orsay, back to back, the only city in North America that will be hosting both exhibitions. My home is just a 5 minute walk from the DeYoung Museum, and I'll be going for the first of several visits on May 26, bright and early!

Here's an article about the exhibition, and be sure to check out the photo gallery of Whistler's Mother being installed. Pretty splendid gold frame, too! Do you think it overwhelms the art?

Can't get used to that new deYoung architecture. I've never warmed up to it. It just doesn't fit in the park.

So do you have tickets yet?

The architecture is growing on me, but I see it every day. I've definitely noticed the patina of the building changing over time. It was a bold design, but it seems to work. The Academy of Science building, on the other hand, is a huge flop. It's just slab concrete, and it's made worse because they kept a portion of the old facade. The slab concrete does not stand up to the comparison.

As a member, I get free tickets to see the d'Orsay exhibit 4 times. I'm going on Wednesday the 26th at 9:30 AM, when it's probably least likely to be crowded. I'll just open the store late, and the philistines will have to deal with it. So that's what I would advise for you -- buy a membership, and go on weekday mornings when it opens, to avoid the crowds and the tourists.

COOL! I just keep thinking of Mr Bean stealing the painting...L.

I am happy to report that Whistler's Mother was appropriately framed in a gold-leafed Whistler frame.
