Help!

We need advice on the best rags, cloth, etc... to use when cleaning Plexiglas! WE use only the Museum quality Plexi for our framing and have not been able to find thus far a truly lint free rag! On smaller size frames it has not been a problem - but when we get to large pieces the little lint specs that seem to appear like tomato worms (out of no where) are driving us MAD!!!! Can any of you veterans out there shed some dust free light on this subject? Please?

:help::help:

Thanks!

PLEASE Let me know!

I really need help on this, too. PLEASE let me know when you find out?
You can e-mail me at @ 2featheryounest@comcast.net
I have found lint free/low lint retention paper towels in the framing department of Hobby Lobby stores. They are not really set out for sale but under the counters and the people in the dept have sold them too me despite the fact they are not "technically" for sale. Surely they are out there on a wholesale basis somewhere!

We have been using the microfiber cloths you can get from Truvue (free)
We also use a product for plexi and acrylics from West Marine called, Plexus plastic cleaner, protectant & polish.
It also removes a lot of the static and makes the acrylic smooth and a lot easier to clean.

HELP-need name of antistatic products shown at WCAF. Read below

I just finished a bunch of 30x40's with plexi in 8% reltaive humidity. :faintthud:
Why is it, the last one is ALWAYS the toughest when doing a set of anything!

I use the cloths that I get from the optometrist's office to clean my glasses. I don't know the exact name of them, but you can get them online in different sizes. Call your local eye doctor and they will help you. They are very soft and can be washed in the machine - don't use fabric softeners of any kind.

But I'm now looking for destatic equipment/tools. There is a company at our trade shows that I've wanted to talk to but I can never accomplish it due to the crowd at the booth. I'm not touching anymore plexi until I have the environment better controlled. It's just not worth it!

I just tried a quick Google search for the company - can't find it. I think it starts with a K.
Perhaps other Grumblers will chime in.
But I did find this........wonder if it would be of benefit:

Thank you so much!!!!! We just bought some of those rags and are going to try them out today! And I will look into the clean - I have found the stuff we are using tends to streak a little!

Thank you again!

Antistatic company could be Kinetronics. We use the antistatic air noozle they sell. Works great.

THANK YOU Rhonda! Kinetronics IS IT! And my husband promised me the same nozzle after he saw me taking to a rare glass of wine after the last plexi order!! Isn't love wonderful!! :) :)

Our favorite is a chamois. A real one. Barely damp. NOOO static! Luvit, luvit!

Hi cousin Ellen!

I have never tried a chamois!....but I'm going to get my very own tomorrow - and put it in a place that hubby can NEVER find it! :) Love IS great!! :) :)

Do you throw it in the laundry every now and then? Dry it in the drier?....no softener.

This stuff does not streek
I spray it on the rag and wipe and polish

I use good ol' many-times-washed cloth baby diapers! Believe it or not, they don't lint up, after they've been washed a few times. (I cannot stand the feel of microfiber cloths....ACK!)

I use the 210 Plastic (spray) Cleaner from LJ #28015 on page 51 of the catologue. Look Ma, no streaks! Like Doug said...spray the cloth, not the acrylic.

I'm gonna look into the chamois though. I love the feel of those! Ooooh!

I used to use diapers and old towels now everything is microfiber, got them from TV but they are all over now, I picked some up at Kmart 3 for 2.50 or something. Air compressor is handy too.

REALLY GREAT STUFF.........

NOVUS!.....for acrylic

Thank goodness I had some samples of this great stuff:

Novus #1 = PLASTIC CLEAN & SHINE (antifog, antistatic & dust repellent)

Novus #2 = FINE SCRATCH REMOVER

Novus #3 = HEAVY SCRATCH REMOVER

I forgot I had these packets. I took the covering off an acrylic lite and discovered what I thought was a smudge. It wasn't - it was a very fine wide scratch. UGH! Why I suddenly remembered having these samples is beyond me! I pulled out #2 and it worked like a charm! I mean it was a miracle!! SUPERIOR carries it - don't know about other places.

I'm going to experiment with #1 soon.

Do you spray it with water? I generally clean with just water, and it works fine, but I like the idea of the chamois.

Let me elucidate. You don't need a very large piece... about washcloth size. When dry, the chamois is stiff and ugly and you may think it won't work. But I run it quickly under the tap, so that it isn't wet all over, just in places. Then I wring and squeeze it until it is moist and pliable all over. Then I wipe the plexi with it...no cleaner, just the moisture in the chamois. There you go....

The microfiber cloths are awesome. For museum glass, you really won't need a glass cleaner. A little touch of water does well on the cloth. Cleaning against a black background helps reveal 'sparkly' flecks that sometimes are in the coating, and also scratches and white lint.

We use old baby diaper cotton cloths for most cleaning, along with compressed air. For museum glass/acrylic, the microfiber is the bomb-diggity (as my 13-year-old would say).

Wash in the machine on hot water, very little soap, mulitiple rinse cycles.

Economizer brand towels & Brillianizer brand cleaner for me. If there's a scratch or scuff on the plexi, Novus fine scratch remover is the stuff.
