Yikes.
Here's how I see it.
Novelty for its own sake isn't always a good thing. Nicole would be one of the first to agree with that. She's a great designer, whose choices ranged from fun and playful, to subtly elegant. She has a good sense of what's appropriate for a piece and when she posts her own designs, they look right on the art.
I think that by 'different', she's referring more to the quality of staying open to new possibilities. In that way, thinking outside the box can be a good thing. That doesn't mean you throw out everything already in the box, as most of them are there because they're time-tested and useful. But staying open to new creative paths is a good practice.
We don't want this to be a place where people are so blindly supportive of one another that there's not any useful feedback given, but that's far from the way things are here. If anything, some people hesitate to show pictures of their work or ideas because they fear someone will reflexively tear it to pieces. It's daunting to post images of your work on a site where the best picture framers around can all see it, and most of them know what they would do to design it even better. Using words such as 'stupid' surely does nothing to ease these concerns. I'd far rather see some things on here that seem a bit tacky or off the charts than have people hesitating to post lest their ideas be ridiculed. No matter what someone posts, there's a way to respond so that the person feels inspired to keep on learning. This can include well-reasoned critical analysis, and most people on the G find a way to keep an encouraging tone while so doing.
This wall corner frame is way not my thing, as it seems sort of gimmicky and faddish. But I'm glad she has the courage to come on here and share it with us, knowing that it will appeal to some and not others. If she ever does design one, it will be more sophisticated than the one shown here, and I'll look forward to seeing it. Often the value of a post isn't so much in the actual project featured, as in the creative paths it invites people to explore. This doesn't have to preclude good conventional designs.
