I'm doing some float hinging and just want to corroborate myself. (Is that possible??)

Have a relatively heavy piece 30 x 40, deckled edge. I'm mounting it to a slightly smaller piece of artcare and then attaching that to the mat. I usually use proper hinging paper 1" by 3" pieces, rice paper paste, and when dry, wrap them to the smaller-sized artcare. Question is how many hinges? Two top, two each on sides and one on the bottom is what I'm thinking.

The other project is a litho on extremely thin paper. The effect of floating is the same in my mind but the fear of cockling is raising its head as these are exceptionally thin.

Help from the all-knowing Grs?

When hinging, lay art face down on clean, flat surface.
Place board on back of art.
Place some weight on board.
Hinge in same sequence as you would when stretching canvas.

Basically you need hinges at the top to form the main support and as many extra ones on the sides/bottom as you need to stop the paper flopping forward.
Make the extra hinges slightly looser, that is don't fold them too tight to the edge of the mounting board. As few extra hinges as practical.
Avoid hinging too near the corners.

Cockling....

There are so many variables...Here a snap of a bunch of pass-through hinges weighted while drying overnight -we do it the same way for hinging directly to the sheet.

I tend to cook paste really stiff. When I need dry paste, I strain what I need without mixing in any water, and end up with paste that has so little water in it it almost doesn't spread. An option is to work paste of a more 'normal' consistency on some mat board, which will draw out some of the water.

An option is Lascaux 489HV, or that mixed 50-50 (by volume) with thick paste. The latter is easier to remove, should that be necessary.

Make sure your hinge paper is just heavy enough to do the job.

Hollytex and blotter on both sides, with a scrap of acrylic or 8-ply directly underneath the weight.

Check out the free article on the FrameTek web pages titled "hinging tips and ideas". This info will stop a lot of hinging failures.

The current (PPFA Recertification) recommendation for hinge position along the top is 1/2" to 1" from the corner.
Do not hinge at the corner.
Add a hinge to maintain each hinge approximately 12" apart.
