Hello everyone. Newbie and first post. I am a professional travel photographer and, in the last three years, have done more and more of my own printing/mounting/production work. I find it just as rewarding as shooting all over the world and a very integral part of the final product. Travel, locate, compose, shoot, process, print, mount, hang.

I love big (photo) art and print most of my best work in a 40x60 to 44x86 format using an Epson 9900 printer. I've read some negative posts here re: canvas gallery wraps but that's how most of my pieces are presented...and sold. My biggest pieces in size and investment are 40x84 canvas gallery wraps of limited-edition photos that I sell for $2,400. I custom build each frame from scratch. I print, stretch mount and hand-laminate (not in that order) each piece with ClearJet solvent-based laminate. None of this is germane to my question...just background. BTW, if anyone is considering hand-rolling ClearJet and wants to know what to do and not do, I have done many...MANY...canvasses and can tell you the thrills and spills texturally.

I am experimenting with new print mediums (wood, glass, metal, lexan) and mounting formats (standouts, backlit, plakmount) and am seriously considering a used Bienfang 5298H Dry Mount Press to dry mount large photos to MDF, Foamcore, Sintra, Mightycore, etc. By "serious" I mean that James at Skyline has found one and I want to buy it.

THE QUESTION: I have heard that hot press mounting inkjet photos is a no-no. Odd, since I have read plenty of examples here of those who routinely do this!! With quality ink (Epson, dye-based) and paper (yep, Epson) and the right techniques, is this standard practice or should inkjet photos NOT be dry mounted in a heat press? This could LITERALLY be the $64,000 question!

The only thing between me and the 5298 are the answers to this question on "The Grumble" so fire away!!!! And thank you very much in advance!!

Welcome to the Grumble! LOVE the penguin photo!!! Great composition with the diagonal areas of chicks in their fuzzy brown coats.

The middle of a weekend is never a great time to expect swift answers from this crowd - by the end of Monday you should have a lot of very professional opinions.

;)

I mount them every day with no problems. I am using a 500TX mechanical press but the vacuum press would make it even easier. You will want to practice with different boards and tissues/films to get the combination you like best. Keep your dwell times low and lower temp tissues/films are less risky. Since you are printing with your Epson you will have no problems once you have practiced a little bit.

The smoother the mounting board you begin with the better the results. I always lay release paper over the print and then another board on top of that such as a very smooth mat board with the surface paper side facing down on the print. Be sure all of your boards are in the press as it heats up so there is no wait time for the heat to penetrate the board on top of the print.

Welcome to the Grumble.

I print hundreds of prints with my 9900 every month. 90% of them get mounted using Kool Tack. Kool Tack also does come in 48x96 sheets.

As to other surfaces, I am not sure about heat mounting Sintra as it has a pretty low temp material.

Sintra's shape will become deformed in a heat press. It should be avoided unless a cold mount adhesive is being used.

Yep.. Epson inks (I print with the pigment inks) take the heat well.
I have had no problem heat mounting any of my images Printed on my 9900.

I'll see you penguins and raise you an ice berg :

Thanks everyone!

Will send the (funny) photo of trying to get a 109" heat press into my house. Thanks again!
