Hello everyone. Newbie and first post. I am a professional travel photographer and, in the last three years, have done more and more of my own printing/mounting/production work. I find it just as rewarding as shooting all over the world and a very integral part of the final product. Travel, locate, compose, shoot, process, print, mount, hang.
I love big (photo) art and print most of my best work in a 40x60 to 44x86 format using an Epson 9900 printer. I've read some negative posts here re: canvas gallery wraps but that's how most of my pieces are presented...and sold. My biggest pieces in size and investment are 40x84 canvas gallery wraps of limited-edition photos that I sell for $2,400. I custom build each frame from scratch. I print, stretch mount and hand-laminate (not in that order) each piece with ClearJet solvent-based laminate. None of this is germane to my question...just background. BTW, if anyone is considering hand-rolling ClearJet and wants to know what to do and not do, I have done many...MANY...canvasses and can tell you the thrills and spills texturally.
I am experimenting with new print mediums (wood, glass, metal, lexan) and mounting formats (standouts, backlit, plakmount) and am seriously considering a used Bienfang 5298H Dry Mount Press to dry mount large photos to MDF, Foamcore, Sintra, Mightycore, etc. By "serious" I mean that James at Skyline has found one and I want to buy it.
THE QUESTION: I have heard that hot press mounting inkjet photos is a no-no. Odd, since I have read plenty of examples here of those who routinely do this!! With quality ink (Epson, dye-based) and paper (yep, Epson) and the right techniques, is this standard practice or should inkjet photos NOT be dry mounted in a heat press? This could LITERALLY be the $64,000 question!
The only thing between me and the 5298 are the answers to this question on "The Grumble" so fire away!!!! And thank you very much in advance!!
