Rubytuesday: Not entirely unbelievable if he was oldschool from the beginning -- Kill 'Em All was 1983, which, by my calculations, would put your husband at high school when it came out.
If I were your husband, I'd freak over a Cliff Burton Tribute. Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets vinyl covers, framed up nicely.
Metallica was my favourite band all through junior high, high school, and first year in college. My cousin got me into them just before And Justice For All came out. Puppets is still one of my favourite albums of all time to date.
Justice was decent, but it was the beginning of a long, slippery slope into the world of commercial (read: sell out) radio. I lost all faith in them after Reload. Death Magnetic is the first album by Metallica I haven't bought. I just lost all love for what Metallica has become. For me, Metallica died with Cliff Burton.
A friend of mine in college won a huge display for Reload and gave it to me, knowing what I would do with it. I defaced it with symbols from the first three albums, hanged it upside down in the window of my dorm, and let the sun bleach it. (The Prismacolor pencils I used, however, stayed their colour.)
At least I still have Hawkwind. And Joy Division. Primus knows what would have happened to Joy Division if they had gone Stateside. But Hawkwind...Hawkwind will always stay true to my heart. I was stalked by Monster Magnet because of a Hawkwind shirt I was wearing just before a concert.
But I digress.
