I know this doesn't help in this case but I wanted to point out that I just received my new blade holder and blades to cut 8 ply on my Fletcher F-6100 computer mat cutter - works great. It even cuts nice ovals and shapes in 1/8" foamcore - neatest spacers you ever saw!

I cut 8-ply alot with my CH Adv. Cut like any other matboard except pull your blade (I use 1200/1500SE blades) out to just past the end of the blade housing(blade adjustment screw will not push out that far). I also apply a small amount of pressure on the bar to prevent warping of the bar which will cause an exaggerated hook.

Hi silentpic

What make is your cutter?

Generally speaking a thicker blade will work better than a thinner one, and a fresh blade will work better than a used one.

I make the first cut with normal blade depth, then pull blade out a bit and cut again. Helps to avoid the dreaded hooks. Also need to cut over the cross mark a bit more than usual or you'll have undercuts.

I'm even more cautious -- I make three passes -- one with blade really far in, one normal and the last out a bit. And, always a new blade!

First, let me say I am not a Mat Cutter, but I cut mats. Meaning I know enough to pinch hit when the real Mat Cutter is out (that's why the hatchet and not the sword).
Our Mat Cutter used to use an F2100. Aside from how to slice it, you really need to experiment on your entrance and exit points.
Your overcuts (on the backside, because there is really no excuse for an overcut on the front) will be at different points. Just as it is different on foil board.
Make a small card that actually sets out the distance over and past the mat opening line and blade depth for different materials like regular board, foil, 6 ply, 8 ply, 12 ply (3 boards stuck together), 1/4 inch f/c, 3/16th f/c and leave space for new materials.
Now our Mat Cutter uses a Gunnar. A push of a (virtual) button on the screen and blade speed, depth, and overcuts are ready to go. Just drop in the board. The same for foil, moorman, f/c or whatever.
Wahtever CMC you get, if you do, I would strongly suggest one that is able to cut more than just regualr board. And do it well. Just like your old Hand cutter.

BTW the new Gunnar will cut bevel and straight edges. Very cool to see.

Hi Marc

For saying ( and I know that you mean it) "... because there is really no excuse for an overcut on the front . . . " you get a great big kiss right in the middle of your forehead!
