Hi, Friends

This is my first post here. I'm happy I found this place, because I frequently have doubts about the framing business, an important one for me, because I think much about the framing solutions that can fit my work.

I've been working on a collection of caricatures of great historical figures.
Now, I'm looking for feedback about the drawings and some advice about some options of the business that are still open. So, I prepared a brief presentation of the ideia, with some few direct questions about it. There are no specific questions about framing, but there are some related ones. Your suggestions about framing would be most welcome.
And there's also a search for possible future partnership beacause framers could have an interest in reselling this.
For those of you who are willing to help me, here it is my caricatures presentation. It will take you just 2 or 3 minutes.

I would be most appreciated if you give me your advice!
Thank you!

Thank you, Beveled.

The explanation is this:
Along the time I've been working in the caricatures, I frequently think about their final use, in a wall. I thought on sell them framed, but the weight of the package would make it very expensive. I also have searched for standard dimensions and for light materials.

So, there are three options:
1) Do nothing about this issue and let buyers take care of it.
2) Give some advice and information to buyers about framing options.
3) Find partners who are willing to resell the pictures framed.

Welcome to the Grumble, Frederico - you may be the first from Portugal!

I suppose that the route you choose depends on to whom you sell the most items - tourists or locals? It seems that tourists would prefer something they could stick in a suitcase easily and locals could cart home a framed image with no problem.

Or is your business mail order?

What are the size ranges?

The more we know the better we can respond to your inquiry.

OK - just looked at the website - seems to me they are all the same size, yes?

Who does the drawings? Funny, when you said you were "working on a collection" I read that as you were amassing a collection of historical caricatures (like from old books and magazines and etchings) - guess I should have looked at the pictures first before I asked you all those silly questions.

Welcome to the Grumble anyways..... :)

Framar, thanks for your welcome!
Most of your questions I think the website answers. The sizes aren´t yed decided, just the original one. I'm still trying to find my market, but I guess my answer would be "locals" and not "tourists" because is an online thing. But it can also be local resellers.
Hey I hope I represent Portugal good, if I am the only one! ;)

Welcome to The Grumble!

You caricatures are extremely well done, but I wonder if there is a market for historial figures?

I generally think of caricatures as being of contemporary figures that exaggerate or distort some facial feature in a mocking, insulting or slightly irreverent way.

But, I don’t see that any of your subjects can be held up to ridicule as, for example, political figures and entertainers can and often are. Not being contemporary figures that are in our every day consciousness, I wonder why you have given Marie Curie squirrel cheeks or Beethoven owl eyes?

Thank you, Bill, and thank you for your comment!

I'm aware that my caricatures are not exacly what most people expect. They don't seek a personal judgement about the person, a satire or a context. Not because of this, but to criticize dead people could also be misunderstood.
My drawings are a formal interpretation that seeks resemblence and fidelity to the original facial expression. Why? Because I think there's somekind of logic that syntethesizes the human figure into our memorys, with a pratical sense of recognition, and I try to reach it.

Normally, we see drawins of contemporary people, that gives the artis a wider range of admirers (and buyers). My option was this, because I truely admire most of this people and I learn a lot reading about their lives (to write the biographies). They were far more important than any movie star you can mention.
I think there is a market to this, smaller, difficult to reach, but I believe so. These people have many fallowers and admirers. They just aren´t in the news everyday.

I didn't try to imitate an owl or a squirrel, that's just what they came up to!

I agree with the others, these are quite good!

When I initially got into framing I was astounded at how pricey it could be (except for aluminum). That was until I started to pick up on the many hidden costs associated with owning a business and the general inefficency in doing anything custom made. Have you ever lifted a box of glass?? ;)

To be fair: there are decent premade frames. However, take it from someone who sifts through fifty boxes of premade frames on a weekly basis: it is hard to find good quality. Well, at least up to the standards of a meticulous artist. I can envison these in some really nice frames, BUT you'll have to feel out the market for your area/niche.

Also as an artist myself, I find it too limiting to stick to standard sizes. It works for some people, but I believe it is not really in sync to the creative process... it's too limiting.

Still, you will sell more art if you do standard sizes.Especially if you choose to sell them matted, and not framed,cause...try as i might, I know the average customer will go look at a ready made.it`s just the way that works..for me anyhow. L.

Thanks, Wanta!
I think the cost and the weight of the frames, any kind they may be forbids me to try to seel my drawings framed. But is usefull for me to know more about the framing business.
I just draw square drawings, and being a collection, I agree with Luddite. It appears to me it has some sense they use standard sizes, so people can look easily for a frame.
But there is also the chance that someone may want to sell them framed on the spot, and choose or produce it's own frames ate his own taste or his costumer's. Because to me pay for ship frames by mail is not possible.
I've seen square standard frames with 50x50cm (19,7" the original size of the drawings) and 25x25cm. I want to make an expanded version, but I don´t know any bigger square standard size. Do you know any?
