Do you put your label on a custom framed piece of the mats were not cut by you? Do you make some kind of notation inside the frame or on the back saying you did not mat it? If a piece comes in mounted do you make a note about that in the frame just to cover your ### if the mounting

I use my label and put a small notation on it.I have a lot of student artist from the university that cut their own mats by hand and sometimes they are pretty bad so when they sell the piece,I dont want the buyer to think that is an example of my work.

I wont use my label unless the job is 100% done by me. Seriously.

But, it's hard with employees who sometimes add one out of habit.

NO label on anything we don't do 100%.

What if you are putting an already-stretched canvas in a beautiful, handcarved closed corner frame? All you really had to do was order the frame and do the fitting. For a customer ordering something like that, wouldn't you want your label on the back?

In general; no label unless I did the full job.

But, there have been some exceptions. I will put my label on it, but note which part of the job has been done by me.

Something like; frame and glass only; label

Sometimes the art has been drymounted, I usually stick a note under the dustcover then, if I did all the mats/moulding/glazing. The design would still be mine; I'd like credit for that.

Usually only if it is 100% by me but exceptions do occur. If the matting, mounting and everything else is up to standards then I will put the label on but make notations under the dust cover.

I will not apply my label to any frame that contains one or more elements that are not up to my standards, or a pre-existing frame that I don't or wouldn't carry.

Also, I have a small, pre-printed form I designed that says something to the effect of "This item was previously framed/mounted by others and had the following pre-existing damage:_______" with a few lines for brief descriptions.

 Rick

If I didn't do it all, I won't use my label.

I also won't use my label on seconds because it doesn't represent my normal quality.

I most generally generally put my label on everything that goes out. If there is ever a problem my computer records as well a their receipt will have any notations of prior work or damage. I don't think that John Q Public puts as much thought into the sticker as many in industry do.

Ditto here. Free advertising.

If the job is sub par NO, but I will remove old labels, unless they are really old and part of the art's provenance. I do this so the next person who breaks the glass knows where to go, ME!

Thanks for your thoughts. I have never left a note on/in the art but I think it makes sense to do that. I only put a label on complete custom frame orders but maybe I'll start taking full credit for any job as long as it's up to my standards.

Artists come in with matted art all the time. If the mats are preservation quality, properly hinged, and well cut and we supply the frame, we will attach our label. We won't use our label on any frames that we do not supply. Our label is our guarantee and we may be taking a small risk by adding it to a mat we did not cut, but I think the advertising outweighs the risk if we are supplying a nice looking frame.

Having said that, this thread has given me something to think about in the future.

I will do everything that was said before. I will put my sticker on it the artwork meets my quality control. I will also put a note under the backing about what wasn't done by me. On old jobs I will re-glue the frame shops label who did the original job and make a note under the backing about what repairs were done and when. Most of the time I look the order up in the system and in the description it will say: c/o Mat, mount or stretch. I had a guy awhile back that brought his stretch Giclee back because it was sagging. I put my sticker on it because I built the frame and did the finish work. I didn't have to take anything apart just look up his order and sure enough it said c/o stretch and bars. I gave him a quote on the open & close, and re stretch. He was then fine with the way it was. I just cover all my bases.
