Greetings all:

What's the biggest sheet of plexi on the market?

I thought it would be 48 x 96, but a customer just called and wants to replace a broken 55 x 65.5 piece!

Do these monsters exist?? And where, beside Loch Ness??

Acrylic sheet comes in large sizes, but it is not
widely stocked. You can contact the Small Corp.
800-392-9500, since they do keep oversize material
on hand.

Hugh

I have a supplier / fabricator that stocks 72 x 144 in FF grade locally...........

You just have to let your fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages. ;)

You will get the plex you need…………just beware what you are letting yourself in for…….you will have a job and a half on your hands handling and fitting that size of plex…..

Make sure you price the fitting right…….that is a real PITA job

Good luck

I shudder just at the thought of getting the paper off of it.

This is interesting as I just had a customer ask if I could frame an old map at 63" x63" using plexi. I know up here at the end of the earth, there is nowhere I can buy that large but if I were down in the Phila area, I could call Rohm and Hass and actually get something that size. The shipping costs up to here would be astounding!!

Thank you all for your answers. Actually I remembered a source a friend told me about once, Ain Plastics in Mt Vernon, NY. They do all kind of custom plexi sizes.

And yes, this seems to be a major job (an old quilt in a shadow box...), but the customer just indicated that if it's too expensive. she may want to just buy the plexi and let the poor husband do the rest!

On that subject: Many customers bring huge shadow boxes with broken frame and glass and want the glass/plexi replaced and the frame fixed.

Then they are shocked that this would cost almost as much as a new shadowbox....

PSST hey Framah, if you need that big call me! I know someone who knows someone who works at Cyro.

You'll have to drive down to get it, but it'll be cheaper then shipping it!

Hey you ME guys: ever heard of Boston? check out plastic fabricators there, or Fastsigns or one of the local sign companies. Or even Portland ME and the shipbuilders who may use plexi for ships' purposes

Now ifyou need UV coating, that's another story.

GE Preform has offices in the Boston area. They typically stock OS acylic and have UV in OS as well. If memory serves, they distribute the "Plexiglas" name brand.
Go to Cyro's or other manufacturer's web site to get info on distribution and product availablility.

Framah: next time you need plexi in a hurry, call Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, right down the street from you. It WAS my understanding they used that in some of their fabrications. Son and his wife were both grads from that wonderful school and were married in the hall overlooking Penobscot Bay. Truly a memorable experience

I called Small Corp and they gave me a price for the 63"x63" x1/4" plexi.

Cut to my size with packaging would be just under $400 plus $110 shipping.

Actually, after I fill both the tanks in my truck, it would come out to over $115. The downside is that a piece that size won't fit in my truck anyhow. So the $110 for freight shipping is a real bargain!!

A couple years ago, a local signage/ display company went belly up and I went over and bought all of their 1/8" plexi.. clear and non-glare. I got over 30 4x8 sheets for $5. each. SUCH A BAHGIN!! I also got 15 sheets of black core gator board for $5. per also!!
For 1/4", I can go to my local glass supplier.

Even tho Castine is about 50 miles away, up here, that is right down the street!!

Framah. OMG! $5 bucks a sheet! I paid about $1,000 for 30 48x96 1/8" sheets and that was about mid way through the big acrylic price increases of last year.

Acrylic is commonly extruded to 72" wide, so finding a supplier is the hard part. Shipping may cost more than the sheet.

BTW, the biggest piece of acrylic is 58' x 18' and is 13" thick at a weight of 79,000 lbs. It is used as an aquarium window.

Yeah!!! Sometimes we just get lucky!! I'm always looking out for businesses closing and if they have stuff I can use, I grab it. A few years ago, there was a place that made alot of motel art and they went under. I bought 15 rolls of PMA for $8 per roll. It was older stuff but all I had to do was roll off the first 5' or so and it was fine. I got a crate of 36x48 of glass for $300 and boxes of metal framing hardware for almost nothing. Unfortunately the moulding they used wasn't anything I could use plus for that they wanted too much.
I love a bargain!!

Speaking of which... if anyone wants 30"x40" beveled mirrors, I have 3 crates with 50 in each crate. I will sell a crate for $500 but you have to come here to pick it up. I'm not moving them again!! It would be better to open the crate and reload the mirrors into your vehicle.

Framah: also just remembered: when my son lived there there is a Champion corrugated plant nearby--forget where. Anyway, around there is a wonderful aquarium store and the guy custom builds truly large aquariums. I KNOW he uses acrylic for a very large aquarium. Find out that store and ask him for a source Would ask son but he's sailing somewhere in the South Pacific around Indonesia

I have used AIN Plastics in Canton,MA. Of all of the Cyro distributors nearest to me they have the best prices. I got a quote from them last week for a cut size 63 1/2" x 94 1/4". It has to come out of 72" x 96" stock! Neil gave me prices for Acrylite FF OP3 .118, FF Clear Film Mask .118, and FF Clear Film Mask .177, that were very reasonable (all under $175). Freight estimate to Montpelier, Vermont was $86.75. I wish that the rest of the job was that easy to price. I have three pieces in the shop right now that are bigger than 48" x 96" and it is really a challenge to design, price, and sell a decent solution.

For XL Plexi near MA try:
