I have a customer that has brought me a silk flag from WWII that she would like to have framed. It belonged to her husbands father and
it is signed all over the place in different colored inks (the silk is cream and it has a big red circle in the middle) (looks like fine tipped sharpies, but I'm not certain). It is quite wrinkled so it would have to be pressed...problem there is that I don't know about the heat having an effect on the ink. A lot of the writing goes right to the edge of the flag so she does not want to lose any of it. So I was thinking providing I could get it pressed I could sew it on an AF board with silk thread and float it with a double or triple mat. Does anyone have any other suggestions for mounting this? As always I appreciate and respect your offerings. Thanks.

If it's silk it's more than likely fragile, or will be soon as it ages and is exposed to light. Plus with thin material like that it's very difficult to sew it without it running or causing large damaging holes in it.

A Direct Contact Overlay is going to be your best bet. It will allow you to float the flag with all edges exposed with no sewing involved.

Just do a search on the main Grumble forum for Direct Contact Overlay and read Jim Miller's posts on the method.

If it's really silk, be very, very careful with heat!

I'd be more worried about the silk than the signatures.

How Big

Somewhere about 25 x 36...she said she took it to one of the BB stores and they were just going to sew it on to a board...she won't leave it anywhere and she does not want to spend the money. She wants the best for a lot less...the flag absolutely does deserve the best...don't know if she'll be back or not...I believe that if she doesn't come back she won't be doing anything with it at this time. She knows I won't do anything that would do harm or could not be reversed. Oh well...can't save the world...but thanks a lot to all that have replied.

She is probably still shoveling out from under the four feet of snow they got in her part of town......

Or should we send out the dogs?

Franny? ;)
