Apparently, hackers are trying to access blog sites, specifically those powered by WordPress. Countermeasures/security fixes are suggested in this Site Pro News article.

Wordpress sites (All) and forums such as this one receive dozens of attempts per hour. That's why you have to check daily for updates, and apply them often.
There are also some add ones to help identify known abusers, through databases. (akismet, stopforumspam, etc)

I (the totally untechie one) read the article in the link. It seems as if the article is geared toward Wordpress.org, and not so much Wordpress.com. There is a big difference between the two. Wordpress.com has a lot of restrictions on what goes in your site/blog to prevent this from happening. I'm wondering if this is a big concern for Wordpress.com too?

For anyone interested, here is the difference between the two. I read up on it and supposedly .com shouldn't have those issues.

Just to make sure that you are protected, login to your site. In the “Dashboard”, click on “Plugins”.
In the sub-menu, click on “Installed Plugins”. If you have one of those security plugins, it will be displayed, so you’re okay. Akismet is only a spam blocker, and, IMO, not a particularly reliable one at that.
If not, click on the “Add New” button. On the page that follows, you can do a “Search” for one of the security plugins that SiteProNews recommends. There are quite a few more than were mentioned in the article. If you do a Search for the general “term: security”, they’ll display everything that’s available.

Hi Bill,
Wordpress.com doesn't have plug-ins. It's limited to widgets which are similar but limited. We are able to do akismet if we want as a widget. Maybe Mike could explain it in more detail.
