I have had some problems getting a perfect cut. I have a chop saw, and invariably, the outside miter joint would have a tiny space in it. I purchased a logan sander and that did not help. I then read about a miter trimmer. I attemted to obtain a lion miter trimmer, but it has gone out of business, and there were none available on line. I recently decided to purchase a Woodcraft miter trimmer. When I sheared off the joints, there was still that tiny irritating space on the outside of the miter. I'm afraid that I've been taken. Has anyone had any experience with the Woodcraft miter trimmer?

I am going to guess that you are using a V-nailer to join your miters, eh??

If so, how close to the outside edge of the joint are you placing a V-nail??

Look closely at your joined mitered joints and see if that outside V-nail isn't pushing the fibers of the wood away from the miter joint itself. The way to tell is if the gap is at the bottom of the miter and not so much at the top of the miter looking at it from the outside end and holding it so the V-nail is on the bottom and the finished surface of the moulding is on the top.

On the inside of the miter the V-nail does just the opposite, it squeezes the joint tighter together as it tries to displace those wood fibers.

I may be wrong but I'll bet that if you dry fit those miters together they will fit perfectly until you drive that outside V-nail into the joint and that steel displaces all those wood fibers towards the outside thus opening up a tiny crack in the bottom of the miter.

Edit: The remedy is to place that outermost V-nail in the joint far enough inward so it can't bend the fibers away from the surface of the join. There is no reason to have a V-nail right up at the outside edge of the joint anyway.

Ok first, stay away from logan when you want to use real tools. I will take heat with that, but it is fine. They are not good for a professional type of job, over the long haul they will not hold up.

If you want a sander you should look into the Mitre Mite Snder, they are the best. Also Mr Ackerman of United sells his version, I have not used it. I have heard from others on here that it is cheaper and does a good job.

Are you using a vice to dry fit the legs first? I am wonderin if this is an issue with each corner or the fourth? If you do a dry fit then you can examine each corner before you glue.

Give us som more info to help you out
