Just wondering if anyone has had any problems with their Wizards cutting hooks/flares/swoops (whatever you want to call them) in the corners of their mats? I used to have the Wizard 5000 which cut pretty perfectly but thought it was time for an upgrade. Just upgraded to the 8000 and no matter what I do, I still have flares and swoops in the corners. Some days it cuts great but most of the time it gives me stress! It is getting so frustrating, Wizard help desk isn't much help, though they have replaced the cutting head. Am I the only one with this problem?

And yes, my blade depth is fine, new backing board, new blades, and I'm always adjusting the rotation for both regular and reverse bevels...I can't think of anything else!

I'm not a user BUT----you're not calling tech support ...because???

Call Matt

Call Matt at Wizard. I had the same problem and he told me how to fix it. 888-855-3335 ext 4448. He is pretty much always busy but it is worth it to leave and message. He will call you back.

I have called tech support numerous times, they have helped me change some settings. The problem I am having is that it isn't staying consistent, I am constantly having to change the settings, every time I cut a new mat it seems. I even sent them some samples to take a look at, and one person told me I needed to "change my idea of perfect." I'm not asking a lot, just that it cuts a square opening. Thanks rhop, I'll give Matt a try.

Somebody isn't reading posts....

I've had a similar problem in the past. Wizard was able to zap it rather quickly. It creeped in again and they weren't able to troubleshoot it as quickly. It seemed that a new pack of blades were the problem. They replaced them.

It has come back again but it's very subtle and intermittent. It sounds like your issues are similar. If it gets any worse I'll be heading down this road again soon.

If you diagnose it, please let us know.

Good luck.

check the head isn't loose on the gantry. this is adjustable with the allen screws on the back of the head (top wheels area) marked with the red spots. Happened on our old 8000 and it took half a day to realise what the problem was which produced similar symptoms. It just needed a routine adjustment.

(I didn't call wizard UK distributors, FramersCorner support for this as it was a holiday, and as checking these things should be routine maintenance anyway they would have quicly figured I was a moron.....

.... ah, they have now just figured I was a moron.....)
:help:

I feel you, my Wizard is only a year old and it knocks itself out of alignment every two weeks. Of course, the boss didn't pay to have it properly calibrated, which she should have, so I can't complain too much I guess. I call tech support every time and they're super helpful, but the machine just goes back to doing whatever it feels like again. Gonna use this as an excuse to splurge for a Gunnar one day......

one person told me I needed to "change my idea of perfect."

I'd have called THAT jackass's boss and told them their machine would be found in the nearest dumpster, if they wished to change there idea of 'customer'!!!!!:fire::fire::fire:

I have had this problem a couple of times and both times it cleared up as soon as I replaced the blade cartridge. Last time the blade was sitting quite snugly in the groove but the cartridge itself was just a little bit sloppy in the head. I wouldn't have thought it was enough movement to matter but changing the cartridge cured the wobbles.

I now have two spare cartridges on hand and any time I get strange behaviour from my Wizard I will try changing them first.

You could try buying a Gunnar but I would bet money it, too, would throw up some surprises from time to time, you just wouldn't get the same support you get from Wizard.

I just love it when the 1st post a person makes is to bitch when they really need to call tech support. After I got the 8000 years ago I had a small problem with consistancy and it was a blade cartridge that was worn. I believe they now include a cartridge with your blade purchase. I bought a package of 5 or 6 and change every couple months. Never a problem after that. Any robo mat cutter it a complex piece of equipment. It need to be maintain and treated properly. Some folks, like my sister and ask how to, howto when she turns on her computer. She's own one for 20 years and still can't "cut & paste" without calling me. BTW she a RN that uses all that equipment in the surgical unit. It's twilightzone time.

One other thing about blade cartridges. When you change the cartridge always do a couple of test matts before tackling anything important or expensive. I know that, logically, it shouldn't make any difference but it does I just changed mine and had to alter the rotation value from +4 to -6 to get rid of a flare.

Makes me glad I still use the ole 5000...11 years without one hitch ( one bladder was replaced ) but that was all ever done to it.

You should definitely call Tech Support and go over it with them. They are very helpful.

I've had this problem before. The simple fixes are blade depth, backing boards, new blade cartridge. Those are things you should be doing regularly. Every once in a while, however, you will need to adjust the Head Wheel. There are instructions in the manual for doing this, and it's not that hard (meaning, even I can do it). But definitely check with tech support first.

Most problems we have had with our 8500 have been solved by changing the blade cartridge. We buy two extra with every pack of blades.

Gunnar tech support in Australia is excellent!

My old Gunnar Rapido has been running for 10 years now without problems or surprises.

On the rare occasions that tech support is needed, to help me tweak a setting because my memory fails me, it's available promptly and efficiently. In the eight years I've had it, I've called tech support, maybe three or four times!
That's my experience!
