Hello folks! sheesh - I haven't posted here at the Grumble in what seems like forever! I still drop in from time to time for a read - but I find I'm just too busy while at work to chat much!We are considering ordering the debossing kit for our Wizard, but we are still not sure just how "useful" it's going to be. Does anyone here have it and do you find that you use it very much?Does it only show well on certain types or colours of mats? Can you get much smaller with text than you can with cutting or V Grooving? thanks for the info!

Yes, I think it is worth it. Yes you can do 1/4" lettering easily. I use it often with old photos on solid core boards. Of course it you will only be able to sell it if you show it.

I use it all the time.

It is great in cases where you want to get more detailed than you can cut, and it's useful for all kinds of special effects. In fact, I'll be showing a lot of it's uses in my class this weekend at the EPFG Education fest.

It's great for "outlining" graphics to be colored in...

It is a bit more effective on suede mats, and some of the designs can be directionally oriented, but yes, I use it a lot.

Here is an example of debossing on a solid core black.

We use it like this on prints framed for the shop. We have not sold a lot of debossing, however. We have sold it when the customer has given us artistic license, but it can be a tough sell for everyday sales as it is hard to see. We have not yet tried using it for outlining graphics to be colored in, and that will be an interesting experiment.

We have an 8500 and, despite its limitations, I would buy the debossing tool again. Wish I had the new Wizard as we could really use that pen tool.

Any photo examples to share?

That's a beautiful example, Kirstie. Did you create the design from scratch in PathTrace?
 Rick

My manager Sarah created it. I'll ask her. My guess is that she used an ivy Wizard clip art and used Path Trace to modify. My more senior staff create all the wall examples with very little input from me and I am always pleasantly surprised.

Thanks everyone - we went ahead and ordered it, so I guess we'll find out for ourselves how well it works when it gets here!

thanks again for your input!!

I would love to see an example of colouring in also. This is the first I've heard of this.........

we seldom use it. but..... re: smaller text, yes you can cut smaller text using debossed fonts, then cutting them as v-groove instead of debossed..

We have not (yet) sold a debossed mat to a real customer in the shop, however we have done a few "foil" embossing jobs with it. But they can be a PITA.

we have also used debossing for the "score line" in folder mounts (fold-overs), and sometimes used debossing to mark out washlines, which are then very easy to pen-in.

I'd say its handy enough if it comes with your machine, as it did with our latest wizard, but I could very easily live without debossing. Its not something we use much.

I think debossing is just a bit too subtle. Customers seem to prefer plain mats, double mats or v grooves over debossed mats.

On the other hand, we just received an order (corporate) the other day for 1,500 debossed mats. So perhaps I spoke too soon

Wonder how long these debossing tools last?

What are you debossing?

Guess if you added a $.25 a mat ($375.00)it sure paid for itself..........Or did you charge $.05 a letter($1500.00).

Ya don't need it but you sure can make money with it...

In the absence of a sane plan or pricing guide on debossing, I added 10p a letter (about 12cents?) plus tax (17.5%) I guess that makes it about 15 cents a letter (3 USD extra each mat).

:icon21: you are right, you dont need it. In fact, if it wasn't included with the 8500 package, I probably wouldn't have bought it as an add on.
We sell very little in the way of accents or cut art. We seem to have customers with very conservative tastes, perhaps the subtleness of the debossing was just right in this case.
