My uncle has had at least two, the latest one with probably a 15-17" LCD monitor. Knowing him, and based on my recollection, he didn't pay much - probably around $100. However I can't find anything like it. The closest I've come is a 7" screen, and one has an option for a 9" but that comes with two cameras and is like $300.

I know I can buy a separate camera/receiver and plug it into my own monitor, but then I need to find a monitor with RCA inputs - not a widespread thing these days it seems, as small LCD TVs are few and far between and computer monitors don't generally have RCA. I really don't feel like wading through pages of specs to find two (hopefully) compatible devices.

I don't want something with any bells or whistles - it doesn't need to be able to record, or motion-detect, or see in the dark, and I can't use anything that runs over IP that you can access from anywhere in the world. I just need a monitor in a back room so when there's no one in reception they can see if someone is out there. A 7" screen doesn't tell you anything from 10' away...

Any suggestions?

Warehouse stores carry a lot of those products, at a very fair price. (usually cheaper than I can get them wholesale, as a licensed contractor) They come with or without dvr and multiple cameras.

Most of the good stuff uses IP cameras these days, and most of it will be wired. (some use wifi) Most of the pro systems either have no monitor, or use a touch screen monitor.

You can find some incredibly inexpensive solutions at x10.com also, for a no frills one camera solution. Another cost effective solution would be a baby monitor, which might have an RCA output.

As far as getting from RCA to analog video, one trick is to run it through an old VCR. (or use a cheap tv, instead of a computer monitor)

Our shop has a simple system that has 4 cameras and a 21" screen. (watching parking lot and customer areas, from the fitting table area) The plaza itself has 16 cameras, which are recorded to a couple DVRs. I can access either of these systems from my android phone, or from home. (for an instant live feed) That sounds a bit overkill for what you are trying to do, however.

i bought a $20 adapter from dick smith to plug our dvr camera into an old monitor i had lying around. The adpater had 3-4 differnt connection and output types.
