Windows - How do I stop annoying error messages et. al?

On the PC I just finished updating, two quirky things keep happening that I'd like to end.

1) I keep getting an error message (it pops up every 10 minutes or so with a tab title "runner error") that says:

could not load the target dll ("c:\ProgramFiles\Backweb\Backwebclient\6.2.3.66\Program\frcom.dll", error code 126)

How do I stop or correct this?

2) Every time I start up the computer, it tries to load some AiOS software, which it can't because it says it needs a resource file on a CD somewhere. How do I prevent it from continually trying to update this software?

Thanks.

Buy a MAC!!!

Sorry... I just HAD to do it. You did set me up with that one!!

Uh ...Switch to a Mac?

:D

Framah ...you beat me to it!!!

You must be typing on a Mac keyboard!

I'm stuck doing Windows.

OK guys, settle down. I'm a Mac guy. Always used Macs. But the only way to get visualization at the front counter that would integrate with my POS was to go Windows. I don't consider myself a defector. I'm typing this on a Mac. I've got 5 Macs at home.

Anymore outbursts like these and I'll have to slap your wrists with a GUI programming book.

My fingers still burn a bit whenever I use my Eclipse mat cutter with the Dell computer.

Unfortunately, I'm considering a new Mac for the main work at the printer but it will be around $5,000+ for what I want... I didn't say need... want!!

The Quad core processor, 8 gigs of Ram, etc. I might be able to settle for a dual core processor but I need the Ram for the scanning and printing. Sigh!!

Richard:

Here's a link to the fix. Read the answer about using MSCONFIG.

http://www.techzonez.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-17359.html

PS: MSCONFIG can be run by going to Start / Run, then type msconfig.

Or, you can restore the PC to a Restore Point just before the problem started.

I couldn't find the file listed in MSCONFIG. Of course, Windows only shows you about the first 15 characters of filenames that can be 40 or more characters long.

The problem started after running updates for the computer. There were 56 updates, and it took most of a day to download and install them all. I'm not sure I want to undo the updates.

I found where the offending file is on the drive, but Windows says I don't have the permissions required to remove it. My Mac does that to me from time-to-time as well. I wish there was an easy way to tell the computer that I AM the OWNER, and I have permission to do whatever I want.

Reading a little on the Backweb, apparently spyware scans may mis-identify it as spyware, and remove it. I guess I'll check that next.

Go to start, mouse up to run:

type msconfig.exe

Program will come up

Used to be a Mac repair person but they just wouldn't break often enough, now I fix pc's and am always busy.

Go figure!!

Hmmmm, Apple's OSX software will only run on a good dozen or so hardware configurations. Windows will run on ...... thousands or more. The problem ain't generally Windows, it is the 3rd party software that runs on Windows. Comparitively, not much software is written for OSX, hence less problems. That is reality folks. Windows is a far more amazing piece of software than OSX will ever be. Steve Jobs knows what a pain it would be to make his OSX run on hardware other than hardware he has control over. BTW, Apple makes awesome hardware. The MAC mini I am typing on right now runs Win XP through Parallels like a charm. :)

I finally got the backweb file to stop trying to load. But the AiOS software still wants to load, just on startup only, not all the time. It appears to be another HP file, but I can't find it anywhere, including MSCONFIG.

And a new question (Can I frankenthread my own thread?)
I just installed a new laser printer, set it (I thought) to be the default printer, and the old printer still comes up, requiring me to change it every time I print. I don't want to delete the old printer driver, because you just never know when you might need something. How can I get the default printer to be the default printer?

Are you trying to print to the laser through LS? If so set up LS to use the laser! In QBs I could set the software to print to multiple printers, ie invoices to one checks to another.

The problem may be in the software and not windows...

BTW Macs are better! but theere is less software available to run on them. Oh and I really don't think that Macs are the equivalent of a Rolls! But having said that you do get shafted when you need to repair either. I mean how many Mac certified repair folks are there? While even Best Buy has people that can work on a PC.

Either way with computers you love them til you hate them! Then you hate them for life.

To set your default printer, open the printers folder in Windows. Right click on the printer you wish to have as a default and pick "Set as default". You will notice a check on that device, to indicate its status as the new default.

If you have LifeSaver, click:
-Configure
-Printing
-Default Printer
-Change from Generic to something else. Then back to Generic.
-Click SAVE.
-A box will come up asking you to pick a new LS default printer, from the Windows list

As far as your other issue, that was probably something HP put on the machine - not Windows itself. It was probably not uninstalled through the control panel "add/remove programs", and it sounds like the folder may have been moved to the recycling bin with it still installed. HP, Dell, and many other companies are notorious for bundling pc's with extra apps and trial offers :( I would check the add/remove programs section for both of those programs, and uninstall anything of this sort.

Does AIOS say what it stands for? There are several possibilities/programs/scanner drivers that use that term. This is probably the most likely:

all-in-one-sidebar from Mozilla FireFox (not part of windows but added later)

-If so, make sure you have the newest version that matches FireFox 2.x
-Because of a bug in Firefox 2, it doesn't always uninstall extensions properly.
-If it still won't uninstall, try these instructions: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_extensions

Best regards,
Mike

IS it in all software that the issue happens or just in one?

Try printing from Microsoft Word, or even from your web browser. If it prints to your laser then its probably not a "default" printer issue but maybe a problem with the one program.

But do print from a different program and let us know if the problem replicates or "is fixed".

The printer defaulted to the laser in other applications. I went into the printer properties for the old inkjet, changed the driver to the new laser driver, and now it shows in the printer list as a Brother copy. The laser now is at the top of the list in Frameready.

I restarted the computer to observe the AiOS software installation again. It says "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available.." Then it shows this file that it is looking for:
c:\hp\tmp\src\aio\setup\AiOSoftware

Looks to be an HP file. Maybe when I get my permanent connection to the internet, I can check on computer updates. Perhaps that will solve that issue.

Hi again

Most likely, a previous installation is incomplete from an "HP All-in-one" printing device. The c:\HP\ folder was likely removed, before uninstalling the software.

Here is an article from the HP web site that will walk you through re-installing it (if you still have the printer), or removing it if not.
