I just combined a dollhouse window with a small piece of art for this shadowbox. I cut a window in the mat and just pushed the window through the opening. The picture is actually a greeting card so it is just mounted behind the window. I've got 1" suede strips as the spacers. The size is 8x10.
Roma equivalent frame 152.00
B4162 suede mat 28.00
uvclear glass 18.00
shadowbox liner 15.00
object mounting 15.00
fit 15.00
window and art 25.00
total 268.00

I feel like it might be missing something, possibly sitting on the bottom. Something incongruous. Any ideas are welcome.

I feel like it might be missing
Binoculars?
Sorry, had to do it.

Remember when you said you wanted to make things out of your collection of old jewelry? I think you're getting into that sort of thing here, it's called "Art".
(a combinationof assemblage/iorama/collage?

It does need just a little something doesn't it? It's supposed to be the outside of a house, right? Maybe you could make it look like stone, some kind of stencil thing? It really helps to brainstorm over these things with a group. Surely others will suggest something.

Looks/Feels like a Russian Icon. I think you should add something like ribbon or dryed flowers, If anything.
You've got a great ability, Kathy. Keep it up!
Even though you're using it as a sample, don't forget to keep it affordable.

Well, I never thought I would agree with Curly, especially after what he did to my house on his last visit (Royalty...HA! You should see what he did to the "Throne Room".), but I digress...
The Icon similiarities are certainly there, don't be too cautious about overdoing it, gaudy is good. Nice job in matching the corners, by the way.

You are good. You could work for me anytime.

Missing? I agree. The answer: A dark burgandy fabric background, will make that baby pop!!!

Keep up the great work!

Well Less I tell you what when my shop crumbles to the ground I will be looking for work. I will provide a resume. If my shop does fail I will be planning on packing the kitties in the car and hitting the road, I won't be able to get far enough away from this place!

Kathy, try a piece of parchment paper w/ old English printing on it, something that may look like an old deed, and maybe some sealing wax, and ribbons. Roll it up in different directions from the top and bottom, then, put it in sort of crooked. Had that thought in the middle of the night, but was too sound asleep to get up and email at that time. Had to wait until the cat walked on me to get up. Just a thought.

Oh, and curtians on the window (show a little modesty, please) :D

The amount of space beween the inner and outer frame seems proportionate, but it does seem empty. Perhaps a hand covered scoop liner instead of the right angle shims, just color on color, but with some interesting transition from frame to background.

Fabulous!!! How about a window box? With some tiny silk flowers? BTW, wherever did you find that terrific window? I never saw anything like it in the miniature world!

Kathy, to follow up on my parchment idea. Antique that piece of parchment. Stain it. Tear the edges. Singe the edges. Make it look really old, and been through the mill. What do you think? I keep seeing this in my mind. Charles, was it you who asked where to get the little windows? Hobby Lobby, or The Little Red Doll House in R.I. by mail order. I just looked. It wasn't Charles. Who did wonder where to buy the windows? I think I'm getting senile, or having another "Medicare Moment".

Susan, I am actually working on the parchment paper idea, it is perfect. Framar asked about where to get the windows. I got this one and a few others years ago at Michael's when they discontinued their miniatures. I don't collect miniatures so I bought them with this in mind.

Nothing additional IMHO, I would consider lowering the frame inside so as there was more space at the top. The shape is kind of pointing upwards and feels a little off balance.
Fantastic craftsmanship!!!!

I'm not a 'real' framer, but I agree with Susan's suggestion. Even though she forgot to take her medication. Lance brings a very valid point to the table as well.
The fact that the mini does seem to point up may give the illusion of an empty-sorta feeling at the bottom.

And, I, too. would love to know how you matched your corners!

I have to tell you guys that I don't think the corners are matched all that well. I cut it out of a much bigger oops frame, so I had lots of extra to waste. The piece on top is the perfectly cut piece. Since I could make it any size I wanted I just marked out on the first piece of wood where I wanted the blade to cut, keeping in mind to center the "motif". I should have cut the bottom piece in the same way. But instead I cut the right side to match the top and then I had to cut the bottom to match the side. Honestly it drove me nuts because the motif on the bottom is not centered. I don't usually do much matching of corners, but I made a gallant try here. Thanks for the kind words.
