Will gas prices affect you going to Decor Expo?

I'm still going at this point anyway. It's going to cost me a lot more, but hopefully I will feel better about it when I get there. But if the price goes over $4.00 a gal, I may have to re-think my plans. I know, some will say suck it up and go. Just the thought of not being able to meet other Grumblers is enough to set me off. I realize things could be a lot worse, like Buddy's situation. Something to think about.

We'll be there as long as the airlines still have fuel!

I think we'll see $4 this weekend.

We'll be there whatever the price. Driving this year, usually fly but we decided to hit the beach for a few days before we go to Atlanta.

The only thing that might make us rethink driving is if there is a gas shortage. Then we'd probably fly and forego the beach trip.

I'm planning to drive down, spend Sat. at the show, head to a ranch in NC. on Sun. to spend a few days, and maybe go on to Raleigh to visit my sister-in law. Alot of driving, but I still don't see me changing my plans to go. Like Maryann, I would alter my plans by flying down if there were a shortage of gas.

Here's a hypothetical situation that might help to keep the fuel cost issue in perspective:

Driving distance: 500 miles; 1,000 round trip
Fuel consumption rate: 20 miles per gallon
Fuel used: 50 gallons
Planned fuel cost: $2.00 per gallon
Unexpected fuel cost: $4.00 per gallon
Difference in fuel cost for the trip: $100.00

If the driving distance is more than that, flying is probably a better choice in any case.

If you're going to the show for education or to make a major buy of framing materials or equipment, that $100 of added cost might be insignificant when compared to potential savings directly related to the show.

On the other hand, if the only reason to go is social activity or a break from shop routine, then maybe that $100 wouod be better spent for a night on the town near home.

HOW ABOUT A FREE LECTURE ON FRAMING?

I'll be driving to Hamilton, Ontario for the PPFA events the weekend after Atlanta, because flying isn't practical. The closest airports are Buffalo and Toronto, which would necessitate renting a car to Hamilton anyway.

If you know of anyone planning to attend PPFA's Hamilton, Ontario event and driving through or near Ohio, I would welcome passengers to make the ride more enjoyable with a lecture on framing. It could be a great time.

But your lecture will have to be free, because I'm not paying for it and driving too. Or if you don't want to give a lecture on the way, you may share fuel cost instead.

I wish I could make Atlanta this year…..but it is just not possible …….perhaps next year I will make it just purely as a social occasion……….I could always tie it in with a visit to one of the factories in Calhoun Georgia that supply me with mats…..by this time next year I should be well due a R&R trip to the US….

A word of warning the are running some stories about the shortage of Petrol/Gas on our new channels………I noticed that Atlanta appears to be one of the areas that has very long gas lines……..if I were there I would risk driving………it could all become a bit of an adventure that would make a great story for grand children……

Take care everyone and enjoy yourselves……

I was planning to go and was really looking forward to meeting the good folks from the forum. But I had eye surgery last week and have to skip it, unfortunately.

When / where is the next one, by the way??

Wish I could go, but getting hitched a few weeks later. So my honey has got the money all tied up in other things...but Vegas could be sweet. Never been and heard they have some nice places for guys to enjoy. I should have thought about that ealier. Well I would like to meet Baer and the other folks, so that will be fun.

Patrick-Go with Baer's advice on Vegas. Best restaurants, Best Entertainment, Great Venue (all under one roof if you stay at the Hilton) and easily the Best Education in the trade.

The numbers of Vendors are increasing greatly every year (not nearly as large as Atlanta), but for my money the most fun event on the calendar

But, if you can make both shows next year

So it will be at the Hilton? Do you think we should reserve rooms now, just in case??
