We have two alleged newcomers to the Grumble who have both posted nearly identical first posts in the computer forum.

What is up with that?

Anyone check into it?

Just wondering if sooner or later they might start wanting some shinny gold frames.......

Spammers testing the system. They get busted once they spam under another user name.

Are they already gone? I've been following some threads in this catagory more often than usual and hadn't noticed.

Yep, when you go to the members list they do not appear. Guess they have been spam banned.

Those guys zap that quickly.

I remember seeing an obvious spam post once. It said it was posted "1 mintue ago" and was zapped before I could type "bye loser" .

Yea, when you report Spam it evaporates within seconds. The Mods are on top of that immediately.

The three threads are still up in this forum.

Posters are probably disappeared though - makes me mad that all of the people who jump in to sincerely welcome and try to assist newbies will become gunshy and less welcoming.

I`m DEEPLY in love

With the mods here...Just wish ALL forums were this "on the ball".Stupid art gallery site has more virus potental than a 50cent hooker! Every third or fourth visit launches a phony virus scan site hooray for delete!!! L.

Those are what I call "Sleeper cell spammers". They post innocently and wait months, then come back to spam.

I've been busy this week and haven't been on top of the spam like usual. Ron and Wally caught most of em.

Curious to know what the criteria is for those two to have been considered spam? I looked at their profiles and while they didn't have much info in them, they also didn't have a bunch of blank fields with N/A in them like mine does. So I just figured they were more familiar with features on sites like this.

The identical posts and matching IP ADDRESSES from overseas.

We also use a database of known spammers, which is shared with other forums like this one. Their IP was flagged.

I always wonder why "we" welcome newbies so quickly ;) I see people jumping in and saying "HI! Welcome to the Grumble....." when the first post looks like a spam email to me. If the poster says nothing about framing in their intro post, and actually says nothing bout themselves, if the poster says the ubiquitous "I hope this is the right place to put this...", well I feel like I'm reading "I wannnt 32 shinny gold fraims, please ship".

But then I may just be more cynical than other Grumblers, I mean I am still waiting for that $35,000,000 check to clear my bank, he did say it would in his e-mail.. ;)

When Newbys post asking questions and tell us how they got into framing, or art, that's one thing, but the generic Hello's, well I wait for further input before throwing open my arms and my bank account info...

Iif the poster says the ubiquitous "I hope this is the right place to put this..."

I get this a lot on a forum I admin as well. It's even more blatant when we have a Welcome forum right at the top of the list. So, when they post in random other forums it's rather obvious.

Most spammers are just looking for abandoned forums, blogs, wikis, etc. where they can post text to increase some website's search engine ranking. If they can get enough of that spread across the web, search engines like google notice that many places are linking to wherever with various keywords nearby.

Here's something new I have encountered on the Grumble lately. Sometimes when I see a "Welcome to our newest member ............" at the bottom of the front page, if it is an interesting sounding name I click on it - or if it seems a suspicious sounding name I click on it (to see if the newbie has filled in a profile, where they are from, etc.) and this brings up a page that says I do not have permission to see that info.

Does that mean the new Grumbler is under suspicion already and in the process of being removed or what?

Just curious.......
