It seems that recently I have had a surge of European "original" oil paintings. I have seen many of these types of paintings on the many tables at the Decor Show in Atlanta. They have a distinct smell and a piece of saran wrap over the top of them. I really want to tell the customer what these mass produced things are and where they really come from, but I bite my tongue. I can just see the artist in front of one these pieces with his paint brush as he is finishing up on the painting. And, oh yes, he is sitting on some sidewale in the streets of Paris or London.

It is all about the memories.............and I will frame them any way they like..................but still, what a rip off.

The Home Goods store near us had a big run of these (already framed!) a few months ago. And compared to the "sofa size" paintings with the sponged foliage and electric sunsets, these were actually pretty good looking.

They also had a prominent "genuine oil painting" label, so that you (and your heirs) would know it was a "genuine oil painting".

Yes, but was it an "original oil"? Just make it look great, and the customer will love it. That's what we're here for.

Most of these "European Oil Paintings" are actually from China. The are the same ones being sold at the "Starving Artist" hotel art sales.

Occasionally we get young folks coming around selling these door-to-door. They claim to be "Israeli art students". Curiously, they don't claim to have painted the particular items they are selling.

Well a lot of the people painting these ARE starving students...over in China somewhere.

At one time I ran across some sets of pictures of one of the "factories" on the web...anybody have a link? Very bored looking 20-somethings working fast, you could almost sense the guy with the stop watch was about to show up.

I'm ok with "Original oil" but "original oil painting" I would have to think about.

PS I got my first telemarketing call directly from China from a vendor I saw at WCAF. Selling "oil paintings" but beyond that language problems were overwhelming. They were going to open up a distributorship in (I think) Bakersfield. And they also carry picture frames, uhoh.
