Could you click on this topic quick enough ??? You wiley veterans out there are saying to yourselves... "IS THIS GUY A MORON ???" The subject title was to get you in here-- take it easy on me, I'm not stupid-- at least not totally.

Okay, sue me. I've been in business for myself for over 4 years. I wasn't exactly a "business man" when I started, I was just a dang good picture framer. After four years I've learned I needed to be both. UNDERSTAND: I KNOW I NEED to do inventory, I know it will show me where my spending habits suck, and I know it will show me how much "stuff" I exactly have. But where do framers like myself start ??? ((I know I'm not the only one, just the only one brave enough to admit it)). I know the first month of a new year is generally a good time to do it. I know I'm supposed to count all glass, matboard, moulding, prints, framed art, foamboard etc. But do I count scraps of matboard, foamboard and moulding ?? Where do they go on my list ?? What do I compare all this stuff too?? Do I wait until next year to compare it to what I have then ?? Where do I put this list of counted "stuff" when I'm done counting ?? I have the general understanding of "the concept" but what EXACTLY are its functions and purposes.

FYI, My business does continue to grow year after year, I'm a better "business man" now than ever before, there is still MUCH room for improvement however---I'm TRYING to do better. HEY! I've had a REAL an accountant now for over 6 months, whoo hoo! : -)

Please refrain from scolding me.

skoog- my accountant walks in my shop every year at this time, says " wow, what do you do with all this stuff/" Then he depreciates everything, and says "how do you stay in business with the way you loose money?" His inventory consists of "man, you got a ton of s--- in here!" (hte loses all add up to a good deal at tax time)

Now that you have a accountant, and it is about tax time this would be a great time to pick your accountant's brain. She/he will be the best to say what inventory is going to help with the tax man and what is going to help you. I found that I was able to see how well my acountant knew his stuff.

Skoogdaddy,

They don't go on ANY list. If you were to sell your business tomorrow, would all that scrap really be sold to the new buyer as an asset? No. Therefore, you don't count it either. As long as you're consistant year after year, you're just fine.

We don't count any broken sheets of matboard, and lengths of moulding under 4 feet, and obviously no scraps of glass.

In addition, we set up our corporate year to end May 31st, to avoid the Christmas High/Lows...........June 30th would have been ideal (coincides with quarterly payroll reports.)

Happy Holidays.

John
