I guess I just don't want to be normal so I make my work a little different than most.

Looks good but I don't understand the shape on the Ali mat? Is that to represent something or just a shape?

So Chris, do you work at a retail frameshop? I know you said that most of these are done on spec for auctions. I was just wondering how you find the time if you are also framing breadnbutter jobs.

These have to take you forever!!!!!!! Do most of your customers just let you do your thing??? I love that!
You are an artist!!! :D

Dave,

No real meaning to the shape of it. Just sort of turned out that way. To be honest I wasn't too crazy about it but it sold so I made another. I have now made about a dozen of them and I have none left...go figure.

I run the design and production end of a large sports framing and memorabilia company. I have an assistant who mans two Wizards for me handeling the more "normal" type work so I have more time to "play" with these special projects. I have a team of six fitters, two guys in the frame room, and one more assistant managing inventory, orders and making our nameplates. I couldn't do all of this without help on the other stuff well at least not as often. After I figure things out I often times will train my fitters to take over the closing and I will start another project. All of the work on here are pieces I have personally designed and built myself but we crank out plenty of other works to fill out an auction. really doens't work to well if all your pieces are this high-end of items.

blackiris,

Thank you again! Yes some are a real pain in the A__! and yes most of my customers have got to the point where they just say "do your magic" and I must say that is one of the best compliments I could ever hear. However the largest part of my work is my companies property so my job is to make pieces that demand top dollar and cause bidding wars in auctions so I have the liberty to do just about whatever I want and then we build that into the price. Of course not evertything works so great but why would I put those on here? LOL

Wow! Amazing work.
Some days I think I have some good ideas and am turning out some nice framing, and then I see work like this, and I learn I have a long ways to go.

Where do you get all the signed items from? I wanted to get a Ali signed item for years and never could, even though he lived only and hour away.

Thanks for posting the great work.
Steve

Steve,

Thanks, actually we get it from a variety of sources. We have a dedicated buyer who does nothing but buy memorabilia. I personally don't have a thing to do with it other than suggesting what may work well with a framing idea. Usually he'll buy stuff he thinks will sell and then give it to me to design something I think will help sell it.

You use creative design and are not afraid of shapes. Good use of customers keepsakes in your layout.

I dunno, the Ali one kinda made me think of the ring and the ropes. That one is my favorite.

I did one brick mat in 1980 with a Keeton cutter. Took forever to do right and never did another. I'd forgotten about it. Might try another using the Wiz. Nice execution.

I actually thought of a way to maybe get them to line up a little better but that was about 400 bricks into it....maybe I can remember the next time I try something like this. This was for a good friend so I spent a little more time than I should have but it was fun and he loved it. Sure was a headache though!

Better "line-up" Chris..... cross-hatch and then delete half of the lines?

I'm just trying to figure out how you got the dang thing to v-groove all the way under the rabbet.... and what a wild outside shape!! :D

can you send me the file :D

of course.... it's the only album and song I know or like of PF's..... go figure.

Actually I was going to fine tune the off-set used between openings. I had it about right for the horizontal lines but missed it on the vertical lines and they basically overlapped and cut a little too much white but hey this was done with the "good ole' boy" pricing so he didn't complain. Actually he thought it added to the look of the brick wall...I guess?

The v-groove was actually very simple, aside from the spacing headache. I had to make the mat a little larger than needed so there wasn't an issue with hitting the rails. This allowed me to cut the v-grooves and then trim the mats to size.

I'm a huge Floyd fan so this was a lot of fun to do.

I was thinking of a few Masons I'd like to put behind that wall......

That would be Free & Accepted Masons.... like Geo Washington, Jefferson, Grant, B Franklin, James Madison . . . well, all of the Founding Fathers.. and 24 other presidents. :D

Wow, I see a lot of artwork because people send me pictures all the time and I must say you are really gifted. I'm very impressed with your imaginative designs. What a great job. Bravo!

What took you so long to find the G? You must have been framing for a long time. If not....then I'm even more impressed!

Thanks Pat,

I've been framing for ten years, my brother-in-law had been a framer for years and got me into the business. I trained with him for the first year and then have pretty much been self taught. A few Wizard classes and reading on my own. I just stumbled on to this site a little over a month ago I guess.
