Question Wholesale Pricing

Do you or have you done any framing at a wholesale level for a designer? I was approached by someone looking to do this. Its not what I normally do, but being that things are a bit slow lately it may be an opportunity to create a little cash flow and keep the shop a little busier.

My question: What markup is appropriate at the wholesale level?

EX: My cost on one of the pieces (materials only, not including labor) is $25.10. My normal retail for the same piece would be $129.95.

Any giudence and opions will be greatly appreciated!

One ups for designers are 15% off regular retail in my shop.

They can charge whatever they want to their clients. Some pass the discount along and charge just for their time. Some bill their clients the regular retail price and keep the discount. Others mark up the invoice dramatically.

I refuse to issue duplicate invoices however. Many have asked for an invoice at 15-20% above my retail price to show their clients... no way, Jose!

The word wholesale can be very confusing and I try to not use it much with clients. Most of my designers get betweeen 15%-30% off retail price and then they turn around and sell it to their clients for what ever they want.

If I'm doing a larger comercial job for a designer than the discount could get closer to 40-50% off retail, which is closer to what most people condisder "wholesale"

Typically eve on the large comercial jobs I try to not go less than 3 times my material cost which in your example would be about $75, which I think is close enought to "wholesale on a $130 retail product.

There are three smaller home framers that I sell materials to because they can't buy them. Anything from moulding to glass to supplies. I charge them a 20% premium over my pricing and they pay when they pick up. These are not designers. There is a different deal with them.
