Customer came in this morning needing a couple of pieces shrink-wrapped. She drove 25 miles to get here, and she claims that I'm the only framer she's found who does shrink wrapping. We're not out in the sticks here, this is the Boston area we're talking about. She probably passed several dozen frame shops on her way to mine.

So the question is: is shrink wrapping THAT uncommon among framers, or do we just not get the message out that we do it? (She said she found me on google; "shrink wrap" is one of the keywords I stuffed in for search engine optimization :) )

For those of you who DO shrink wrapping, price-check time: how much to shrinkwrap a 26x31.5 piece?

I do shrink wrap all the time Jim!!!!

I would be right around $35 or so for that size.
Thats with FC. :D

Great price Nicole. I get $5 for that size...

OK just kidding... Do a lot of shrink wrapping, and in spurts. I'll go months and do none then have to do 20-30 pieces in a week.

I have shrink wrapper but for some reason I can't get the blankety blank thing to work right!

Old dog, new tricks???

:help:

Call Winnie. I complained on here about how poorly the cutter was sealing the bags, about the seal tearing open.

She got me a new mat to cut on. and we tracked the problem down to "operator error". I had developed all these ways to compensate that I ceased to use the wand correctly. I was cutting through the plastic then sawing like a knife.

Get the cutting mat onto a real flat surface and come down straight onto the bag. Lift up straight and no extra "wiggles" or fixes to the cut. Its really easy, and when you start making it difficult you start to mess it up. ;)

25 miles? Did she go by Harry (Shrewsbury) or me? We both shrink wrap, but he does much more than I do.

In fact, now that I think about it, most of the framers in Worcester will shrink wrap.

I've had a machine since I opened my shop.... not bad usage.

$16.82 on acid free.

That's .29/per united inch.

Maybe she thinks none of the other shops shrink wrap because they didn't come up on Google. All the ones she passed may actually offer that but if she only went by her Google search for the word "shrink wrap" and they don't have that listed as a key word, then they wouldn't come up.

Hey Dave...............might be the fuse that needs to be changed.....???
OMG am I seriously giving advice.......this freaks me out.....

Looks like we're programmed to charge about $21 for the job. Would probably include regular FC, then bump it up a few extra bucks for the Acid-free. It also includes the PIA fee. :D (or "Corkage Fee" as someone wanted here wanted it stated).

In addition, my stock of shrink wrap film is now just flat, meaning I have to double it over itself first to make the bag. Its also thicker. Thinking its the film they put on top of microwavable dinners instead. This stock was left over from the old owner -- gee, thanks!

Assuming that the piece has already been mounted or backed, I would charge $12.40.

If we were to include foam board backing, we’d hit her up for another $17.00.

What's the weather like there this time of year? ATG the perimeter of your window and put that shrinkwrap up as a storm window :)

I've taken the shrink wrap apart and wrapped maps that were 4 by 6 foot. That was a drag but made a loyal customer as no other shop in the area, that she went o, could figure out that 36" folded on itself was 72 inches separated ;):)

How do others get the shrinkwrap opened when/if you cut beyond the split? I put tape on both sides and pull apart that way.Easier than trying to open it with a mat blade, my previous method...

Any tips or trics?

This year, I'm going to use 1/8" plexi I have laying round to storm up the windows on my little sun porch. That and a roll of the clear tape and I'm all set.
If I used shrink wrap or the stuff they sell to do windows, the kitties would have that torn apart pretty quickly. One little bug trapped and that would be the end of that.

We don't shrink wrap. We choose not to breath plastic fumes.

used to do it..not enough demand to offer this service so we quit doing it.

I got rid of my shrink-wrapping stuff maybe a year or two after I bought it because, #1 people were using shrink-wrapping as a cheap substitute for framing, and #2, down the road when the shrink-wrapping tore or wrinkled, they would bring the carp back to me assuming a free replacement.

I gave up trying to tell people it was "temporary packaging to keep posters and such clean until you get them framed" and nobody understood so I sold my shrink wrapping equipment to an antique dealer.

Good riddance!

We used to do a ton of shrinkwrapping for artists and photographers. Since online shopping has become so popular, many are now using those clear plastic sleeves instead of having us shrink wrap.

We are at $13 for regular foam core, $16 for acid free.

We offer shrinkwrap as a service. For your size, our charge would be $11.60 plus tax.

That does not include any matting, and 90% of our shrinkwrap orders do include matting in the sale.

I couldn't tell you how many shrinkwraps we actually do. Most of the shrinkwraps we do during the year are done in March and April, which is when all the children's art shows are here. I'd guess we average 4-6 a day then. Outside of that, we probably do 1 shrinkwrap every 3-4 weeks.
