I have just added picture framing to my photolab buisness. I have purchased second hand a Morso Guilotine and Morso underpinner and a fletcher mat cutter. I was wondering what books you would recomend on framing as a lot of the books I have seen are targeted at DIY framers.

Many thanks

Nick

Where is Austraia?

Welcome to the Grumble.

Welcome, Nick. (Pay no attention to HB, who's just upset 'cause most of us aren't sure where Canada is.)

There are some particularly sensitive professional framers here (and I'm not implying that HB is one of them - I might be one of them) who may resent the suggestion that you can learn framing from a book. Most of us old farts learned by trial-and-error or by working with someone else who learned by trial-and-error.

Avail yourself of some of the excellent educational opportunities which must surely be available even in the outback. Find an experienced (and self-confident) framer to mentor you. If there is a trade association in your area, consider joining it. Go to trade shows. Read The Grumble (and take everything you read, including this, with a grain of salt.)

In the meantime, you ARE a DIY framer, so don't thumb your nose at those books. There is information to be gleaned from a variety of sources.

Cheers Nick, and welcome to the G.

Good on ya for jumpin in that way.

Your rig is fair dinkum, now all you need to do is join the PPFA.

Also, my strong suggestion is start down there list of books for the CPF test... and start ordering. Don't forget the new "Fabric Wrapping 101" DVD that plays on all world formats.

The PFM bookstore is also chock full of great books; and also has the "Fabric Wrapping 101" DVD, that is playable on all world formats.... :D

My "Fabric Wrapping 101" DVD that plays on all world formats should be here this week.

In the meantime I have Vivian Kistler's books and DVDs from Columba Publishing to tide me over (also available on eBay "columbaco").

But what I really want is a "Fabric Wrapping 101" DVD that plays on all world formats ;)

Welcome!

I'll give a vote for the Vivian Kistler books. “Picture framing” Volume 1 is a very good overview to framing. There are more volumes available on specific framing subjects, such as Vol. 6 for framing photography.

Jeez Rob, you're making me blush.

Not really; but it sounded good.

Great to meet you at the show. SEE folks, Canadians are as brash as Auzzies when it comes to wading through deep crowds . . . .

Oh wait.... you were at the booth about 5:30...no crowds.. smart guy.

We are following up with our UPS Agent about shipping into Canada. It should end up being seamless..... (I couldn't resist, I just cotton to puns. :D )

JohnR, I never recommed Vivians #1 & #6.... I just tell them to pick up the whole set. Put them on the nightstand and read before bed so you relearn it in your sleep....
Come Christmas, you'll be framing in your sleep anyway...

Hi
Thanks you for all your advice I will start chasing down the books recomended. The people that sold me the equipment have been training us. The more information and ideas you get the better (or more confused). As with the DIY books some of the ones I have seen are more about making frames from scratch ie sticking shells or painting them which look fantastic but at the moment i I need to work on comercial type framing. As I need to order these books in I want to try and order the good ones.
Many Thanks for your replys

Nick

Wish I had "Fabric Wrapping 101" DVD which plays on all world formats by tomorrow morning. I procrastinated again (whine). But...for next time, Baer, how may I order one??? And/or books of the same?(You have my address, right?)

Val beat me to it. I was also going to ask Baer how I could order his DVD! I'd love to own a copy and I see that he is looking at shipping it into Canada... I can't wait.

Dave is IN-correct but thanks anyway Dave, it's MPF, not MCPF (at least not yet). But he was correct aobut the price; if you are a PPFA member, you get the PHamous PPFA discount.

Or you can order it through:

PFM (not up on web site yet) so call Gina in the Bookstore Toll-Free: 800-969-7176, she'll be excited that she's getting press on the Grumble.

or

Direct through Frank's Fabric
or call Frank himself at 888-332-2749.

The DVD is fair traded at $45 and as Dave pointed out there is that benifit of being a member of PPFA.

For those that belong to Chapters, I am now approved to come teach at your chapter. You can reach me through my email; which is the easiest.

Oops! Oh, well... at least I'm in good company - seems PPFA thinks you're a MCPF also! (they spelled 'wrapped' wrong, as well.)

It was really great meeting you in Orlando, Baer. (even though you weren't 10 feet tall and bulletproof!)
