There have been lots of threads talking about the ravages of the economy, and quite a few posts sadly talking about closures, so given all of that, what's your best guess at the total number of framing businesses across the country?

My guess would be that we are down in the 5-6000 range. It was not long ago that there were 4-5 times the framers in Columbus as there is now.

well, 83 have closed in Florida that I know of..but it's a big state, and I have no idea how many are still around in the stste....I do know of a couple not far from here on thier last legs, hopefully they'll survive.....judging by the number of shops for sale on BuyBiz.com last time I checked, I think many are trying to sell out before going belly up.

I'd guess that Dave's number is fairly accurate and in January will be considerably lower. I've seen several that were hoping to make it through Christmas that couldn't hold on that long.

i only know of 2 that have closed in my area. they don't seem to go away here. somewhat near my shop and they were right across the street from each other.

Ive wondered that for a while. Back around 2001 PFM did in article in which they said that as of that time there were aprx 10,000 frame shops in the U.S. So I would think the guesses of around 5,000 would be pretty accurate with the way the economy has been since then.

I dont recall if PFM said that number only included retail shops? or Home based framers as well
