I have a customer that has about 100 photos he wants scanned and put on a disk. Most of the photos are in frames, a combination of ready made and custom. In order to scan them I have to take them out of the frames. They then have to be put back in the frames. Don't have a clue as to what to charge for taking them out and putting them back.

Suggestions? Thanks!

By the hour. Take one out, scan it put it back in, doing so at a gentle pace. Apply that time x's 100 and then add a little to it.
Probably is going to seem expensive, but time is time.

they can buy a $100. scanner and do it themselves, but they don't want to.

PS. didn't see the custom frame thing. On those of course you have to charge for unfit/fit as well. Same concept though.

Well you can charge double your fitting charge (based on size) for taking them and in and out, or you could charge an hourly shop rate of around 60/hr. Scanning not included.

And I betcha most of those frames will be difficult to remove the photos from. Charge for unfit, refit, and time scanning.

and if you think that's too much, last time my car was in the shop, I noticed a sign on the wall that declared that the shop rate was $140/hour.

I'd charge my normal "fitting" and "customer's frame" fees for each frame that they brought in, and I'd charge labor for the scanning. My scanner isn't so fast. I'd test one and see how long it took to do, and charge a labor fee off of that. Probably 3 to 4 hours of labor.

If a significant portion of the frames (i.e. at least 20 of them) are just tabletop frames that you can pop the photos in and out of quickly, I'd reduce my charges by getting rid of the fitting fees for those.

It's a time-and materials job. You can try one or two representative ones to give the customer a "ballpark" figure. But be sure they understand that working with previously framed pictures is often much more time-consuming than starting from scratch because you find unpredictable conditions. Get your full shop rate per hour on the framing and scanning, plus materials for the refitting.

and every thing will be just peachy UNTIL you run into that batch were everything was glued together!!!!!!!!!!!:fire:
