I need to replace one of my sets of blades what would you recommend?
I have heard Forrest makes a good blade. http://www.forrestsawbladesonline.com/index.html

I am replacing a set of 12" 5/8" arbor 80 tooth Skarpaz

You will get as many recommendations on this as there are framers probably.

I have used Forrest blades for 12 years and wouldn't consider any other brand. They are top quality and, if you return them to Forrest for sharpening, they will last forever.

That's MY personal opinion.

why not call or email Forest for a recommendation as to what blades they recommend for the type of service you are intending to do :

I.E. I am a picture framer and want to cut 1/2" - 4" prefinished wood moulding - some on which will have hard gessoed surfaces.

I could not disagree more and I believe that it it a disservice to all framers to make a blanket statement about a company without specific information.

I have used Ultramitre Blades for years and use them exclusively to resharpen all of my blades (including those not made by them.) I will admit that there have been one or two times when I didn't feel the resharpening was as good as it needed to be, or that the blades could have been tensioned better, but when I called it to their attention they quickly corrected the problem.

I run a pretty busy shop and have two double mitre saws, a CTD single arm saw (plus a sliding table saw and a regular table saw and two Makita "chop" saws )

I have specialty blades (especially for cutting acrylic) that they made for my specific application (turned down plate, narrow teeth) that cut through acrylic "like butta."

If you buy their blades at a trade show, they offer great deals, and they exhibit at trade shows so you can get to know them personally. Better yet, they also distribute CTD equipment and have helped me with machinery problems that were not blade related.

To me, it's not just the blades, but the relationship with the company that sets them apart. They know framing and framers.

FramingGoddess, I couldn't agree more.

If a company did that to me, I would want everyone to know what kind of service I got.

If a company goes above and beyond, I mention it here. If one treats me poorly, I mention it here.

Because of the other thread and a few other bad interactions with them from other Grumblers I will stay clear from them.

The rule I run my shop by is...

Make one person happy and they tell a few people... make one person upset and THEY TELL EVERYBODY!

I can't tell you where to look, only where not to look.

So I read the entire thread and I am unconvinced. It is highly POSSIBLE that the "shank" (the part of the blade that the tooth is braised to) of the blade was cracked and that when the blade is cleaned and inspected before repair, that the cleaning loosened whatever was holding the shank to the plate and the shank fell off. There are a lot of teeth on a blade. I have sent in blades and have been called that a tooth needs to be replaced - and I never noticed that it was missing before I sent it.

It was not my intention to reopen this can of worms, but I remain steadfast that Ultramitre is a good company run by good people and I will continue to use and trust them. And I also own Tenru blades, think they are excellent, and I have Ultramitre sharpen them.

Perhaps we all need to be more careful in inspecting our blades before they are sent for resharpening.

Rob, I agree

BUT, it is all too easy for a company to look good/do well when things go right.

I think how they handle a 'Situation Gone Wrong' is a far truer measure of a company's character and integrity.

I think they could have handled this incident better. Somehow, something went wrong and it was up to them to make it right. Just like it is ours when something gets botched (no matter who is to blame) in our respective shops.

Shaun,
I drove out to Leuco yesterday and met Nelson. He was a super nice guy and took the the time to show me around and introduce me to the people who would be handling my blades. We discussed the problem I had with UltraMitre and he assured me that wouldn't happen with Leuco. All in all I was pleased with their operation and liked the people I met. Thanks for the recommendation!

Rob,
I doubt you would feel as you do if this had happened to you. I posted a follow up thread last week that you might want to read. It shed a great deal of light on how UltraMitre deals with customer conflict. My stated intention, both here and to UltraMitre, was to salvage our relationship. Here it is:

Ok let us not go back and revisit that thread and quote it word for word over and over. Mark has had a good experience for many years, he won't change over a thread on the intranet. Dan has had a bad time with them, he won't use them. We all know this, we won't change his mind either.

This is fruitless, let it rest. We are all aware of the situation. We hope Mark continues to have service he is happy with. We also hope that Dan can get good service he is happy with. End of story.
